action
The homosexual archaeologist Brett Lynch is brutally beaten up and threatened by masked figures at night just before her friend, the opera singer Flavia Petrelli, finds her. Shortly afterwards, the director of the museum in which she organized an exhibition of Chinese art was murdered. In the course of his investigations, Brunetti discovered that two valuable exhibits, two vases, had been stolen and replaced with sophisticated counterfeits. Brett found this out too and now has to fear for her job, as she would not be allowed to travel back to China without the originals, as they were only loans. The raid was intended to intimidate her and get her to leave it alone. In addition, her friend is blackmailed into losing custody of her children because of her homosexuality. With the help of friends in the antique trade, Brunetti stumbles across the rich art collector La Capra, but cannot prove that he actually stole the vases, as he does not allow him to see his salon under the pretext of renovating. In the evening, Brett received a call from a stranger in her apartment asking him to leave the guarded house, saying that he had Flavia in his control. Shortly afterwards, Brunetti learns that Brett has disappeared, but finds a note and rushes to La Capra with Flavia and Vianello. He actually owns the stolen vases along with other rare antiques. When he gives Brett a valuable bowl, she drops it. Horrified at the loss, La Capra has his son take her to the basement flooded by the Acqua Alta, but she is able to defend herself against his acts of torture with a belt buckle, also from the illegal collection, and he dies. Brunetti confiscates the stolen items and issues arrest warrants. A little later he exchanged the vases with Flavia on Marcusplatz, and she gave him the plagiarism. He passes it on to Paola. When handing over a vase copy breaks.
