Dudley Taft (actually Dudley S. Taft junior born July 4, 1966 in Washington, DC ) is an American guitarist , bassist and singer .

family

Taft's father - Dudley S. Taft - studied at Yale and founded the Taft Broadcasting Company in Ohio . Taft junior comes from a large Republican family: he is the great-great-nephew of President William Howard Taft . Senator Robert Taft junior and Governor Robert A. Taft also came from his family . In his interviews or on his website, Taft never goes into his prominent origins. He graduated from Berklee College of Music and lived in Seattle for a long time . He left town around 2008 to settle in the small town of Chapel Hill , North Carolina . He has two daughters with his wife Michelle. Together with his brother Woody, who has taken over the management of his father's company, he invested in one of the first legal farms for growing marijuana in the USA, which is likely to be rather unusual for the offspring of a large Republican family, like his entire life so far .

Career

At high school he formed his first band called Space Antelope with his friend Trey Anastasio , who later started the band Phish . At the beginning of the 1990s , Taft witnessed the emergence of grunge in his then home town of Seattle , which influenced him. He got on bass in the 1990 Seattle-founded combo Sweet Water - not to be confused with the band Sweetwater from the 1960s - and toured the USA with Monster Magnet , Candlebox and Alice in Chains as a support act for the grunge boom . The band recorded two albums with Atlantic before Taft left the group to help found Second Comming , also in Seattle. Single releases of the band rose to number 16 in the US rock charts and Taft toured with this band in the opening act of well-known bands such as Godsmack , Kid Rock , Lenny Kravitz and VAST . At the beginning of the 2000s he also left this formation to found his own group Omnivoid . In the mid- 2000s , inspired by an encounter in the studio with Robert Plant , he dealt more intensively with the blues . From 2006 he also played it on stage and in the following year founded the Dudley Taft Band with guitar / vocals , drums and bass . On tour, the trio is often complemented by a keyboardist .

style

The band composition is reminiscent of the newer style Texas blues such as Bugs Henderson played. Tuft's music is often referred to as Seattle blues : a mix of elements from both blues and grunge. In his music there are numerous influences from ZZ Top to Joe Bonamassa to Stevie Ray Vaughan - complemented and combined with the elements of rock-heavy grunge.
