Johner has been playing in Europe since 2007/08 and won the Swiss championship title with the ZSC Lions this season . In 2008/09 he reached the play-offs of the EBEL with the Austrian club HC Innsbruck , where the Innsbruck team were defeated in the quarter-finals against eventual champions EC KAC . Johner came to Innsbruck on 60 missions, where he scored 52 points scorer.
In 2009/10 he only had two missions in the Finnish Liiga and played the rest of the season for the Heilbronner Falken in the DEL2 , with which he was able to reach the quarterfinals of the play-offs again, which was lost to EV Ravensburg . In his 41 missions for the Germans he scored 53 points scorer.
From 2010 to 2015 he played successfully in the Swedish Allsvenskan . In the 2010/11 season he succeeded with the Växjö Lakers promotion to the top division SHL and repeated this with the Djurgården in the 2013/14 season . With VIK Västerås HK , he played again in the Allsvenskan in 2014/2015 and scored 23 goals and 23 assists in the regular season , making him second-best goalscorer and fifth-best scorer in the league. He also scored the most power play goals (17) in the Allsvenskan this season. In a total of 278 games in the Allsvenskan League, Johner scored 106 goals and 108 assists.
From 2015 Dustin Johner played again in the EBEL for the Villach club EC VSV , wore the number 9 and scored his first goal on October 13 with a 1-0 lead against EHC Linz . His first derby goal against EC KAC followed on December 20 with a 3-2 opening goal. After initially unsuccessful, the center strengthened in the last third of the main round after his move to the right wing. Towards the end of the qualifying round he was meanwhile top scorer and point leader of the VSV and also had the best plus / minus balance of the club. After the VSV had been picked by the Vienna Capitals for the play-off quarter-finals, the Villachers developed a 3: 1 lead in the best-of-seven series. In the fifth game, Johner put the 3-2 winning goal in overtime to 4-1 and brought the VSV to the semi-finals. There the Villach were eliminated against Salzburg. Johner was the club's second-best goalscorer and third-best scorer, and he also ended the season with the best plus / minus balance of Villach.
Also in his second season with the Villachern he was the second best assists and third best scorer of the team, but the VSV could not reach the play-off. After the end of the season, Dustin Johner did not receive a new contract offer.
In July 2017 he was signed by the Belfast Giants from the EIHL and was the first player in the club's history to be number 83. In the first season he won the Challenge Cup with the team. In the following season he had a significant share in winning the Giants' EIHL championship with 23 goals and 23 assists.
