The Executive Agency for Small and Medium Enterprises ( EASME , English E xecutive A gency for S mall and M edium-sized E nterprises ) is one of the executive agencies of the European Union . These occupy a special position among the EU agencies. They are set up by the European Commission and are tasked with managing certain programs. They are not set up permanently, but only for a limited period and have the rank of Directorate General of the European Commissionequated. In contrast to the other EU agencies, they have to be located in Brussels or Luxembourg .
EASME was founded by the European Commission on December 23, 2003, originally under the name Intelligent Energy Executive Agency (IEEA) to implement the "Intelligent Energy - Europe" program. On 1 May 2007, the agency was in the Executive Agency for Competitiveness and Innovation (EACI, English E xecutive A gency for C ompetitiveness and I nnovation ) renamed and their goals and objectives have been redefined. It was the first in a series of new executive agencies set up by the European Commission on its own initiative to implement strategies more efficiently and effectively and to help the Commission focus on its policy-making and institutional tasks. It has had today's name since 2014.
Initially, the agency was solely responsible for implementing the Intelligent Energy - Europe (IEE) program. In 2007, the area of responsibility was expanded to include the Marco Polo program , which has been overseen by the Executive Agency for Innovation and Networks since 2014 . Its superior authority is the General Directorate Energy and Transport , which is also responsible for the implementation of the IEE initiative.
The Executive Agency was originally scheduled to run from January 1, 2004 to December 31, 2008, which was later extended to December 31, 2015. The agency is based in the Madou Plaza Tower in Brussels .
