Estrie (also called Cantons de l'Est ; English Eastern Townships ) is an administrative region ( French région administrative ) in the south of the Canadian province of Québec .
It is further divided into six regional county municipalities (municipalités régionales de comté) and 89 municipalities. The administrative seat is in Sherbrooke .
The population is 312,150 (2011), the land area 10,194.6 km², which corresponds to a population density of 30.6 inhabitants per km². 93.5% of the population speak French and 5.9% English as their main language.
To the southeast and south, Estrie borders the US states of Maine , New Hampshire and Vermont , to the west to the administrative region of Montérégie , to the northwest to Center-du-Québec , to the northeast to Chaudière-Appalaches .
