Eckener House in Flensburg

The Eckener-Haus (formerly: Alt-Flensburger Haus ) is one of the cultural monuments in downtown Flensburg . It was named after Hugo Eckener , the Flensburg aeronaut , entrepreneur and honorary citizen of the city of Flensburg .

background

The late-Gothic brick-gabled house at Norderstraße 8 near St. Mary's Church was built gradually from the 16th century. The late baroque facade of the building dates from the middle of the 18th century. The said two-storey front has a so-called utlucht left and right of the door entrance . After 1853 three were Putten from sandstone mounted on the pediment. They come from the Neuwerkgarten in Schlossgottorf in Schleswig . The three statues represent personifications of the seasons . Viewed from the front, winter is on the left , autumn in the middle and summer on the right .

Since 1867, Schleswig and Holstein formed the new Prussian province of Schleswig-Holstein . Flensburg belonged to the German Empire from 1871 . A time of upheaval had begun in Flensburg. The industrialization progressed and the population increased considerably. This is how Johann Christoph Eckener from Bremen settled in Flensburg. In 1867 he married the Flensburg shoemaker's daughter Anna Lange. In the house at Norderstrasse 8, they opened a cigar and spice shop. Since then, the middle-class Eckener family has lived in the house. Her sons Hugo Eckener (1868–1954) and Alexander Eckener (1870–1944) later became famous. This is why her parents' house or “birthplace” was later named the Eckener House.

In 1914 the building was renovated by Hans Maria Ehrhardt and set up as a monument of bourgeois living culture, hence the name Alt-Flensburg House. It has served as a restaurant since that time . Later, further parts of demolished Flensburg houses were added to the building, including parts of the government courtyard that was demolished in the 1960s and served as the seat of the Schleswig State Assembly ( Ständeversammlung ) and as a long-term temporary replacement for the Old Town Hall . It was also equipped with furnishings from the Flensburg Museum . The mixture of local history museum and dining room became the parlor of the city. In 1976 , a brick extension was built on the side facing Neue Strasse . In the 1980s until the 1990s, the house Eckener still part was the tourist - logos of the Tourist Association of Flensburg and around eV had the based in the neighboring Norderstraße 6th It also acted as a kind of landmark for the city. In 1996 the Förderkreis Eckener Haus eV leased the building but failed to manage it as a memorial and restaurant. Different operators tried it afterwards and always gave up. The heating costs and a renovation backlog should have been the reason for this. The gastronomic management was apparently stopped in 2008.

Today the building is still empty. More recently, requests for a museum have arisen that should deal in particular with the more recent history of Flensburg with the end of the war in Mürwik (see special section Mürwik ). The old museum on the Museumsberg had served as a city history museum in the 1980s, but in the following years it turned out to be an unsuitable location for the more recent history of Flensburg. In addition, parts of the old city history collection, for example the city model that depicted Flensburg around 1600, had been brought to the Flensburg Maritime Museum , which opened in 1984 . An exhibition room remained from the large urban historical area of the collection. Today, a gallery concept is pursued at the local location, in which new exhibitions for works of art are constantly being created. The city's history no longer has a place in the museum concept. Therefore, the city initially hoped for a museum at the marine sports school in Mürwik in the 2000s . These plans failed. At the same time, the empty naval hospital in Flensburg-Mürwik continued to fall apart . The historian Gerhard Paul criticized the lack of a museum in May 2015, stating that where one could remember, it is not done and went on to explain: “Flensburg has had a hard time with memory to this day.” Finally, the city then thought about it a museum in the Eckener House in downtown Flensburg . The plans were apparently quickly rejected. Other alternatives began to be considered. Nevertheless, as part of the renovation of the old town in the coming years, the Eckener house is to be repaired and given a new purpose.
