occupation

An ideal husband is a film comedy by director Herbert Selpin from 1935. The literary film adaptation is based on the play of the same name (1894) by Irish writer Oscar Wilde . In the main role, Karl Ludwig Diehl embodies the English diplomat Lord Robert Chiltern, who is threatened with doom by an earlier affair.

action

The villa of the English diplomat Robert Chiltern is located in a sought-after residential area in one of the best areas of London. On the occasion of the birthday of his wife, Lady Gertrud, a reception takes place there, at which important personalities appear. To the chagrin of the diplomat, the attractive Gloria Cheveley, to whom he was engaged in earlier times, also appears. Robert Chiltern suspects that her appearance means nothing good. His premonition comes true when Gloria explains that she is in possession of a letter, the contents of which will cause him difficulties should it become public. She asks him to support a project in front of the responsible Chamber of Industry in her favor, otherwise she would publish the letter.

Robert initially rejects this request, he believes that his former fiancé was attempting to cheat and is of the firm opinion that she wants to get rich at his expense, without having a real reason for it. However, he also considers the consequences if the contents of the letter were to be published. His marriage to Lady Gertrud might be in danger. In the worst case, his entire existence could be threatened.

Since Robert does not respond to the request, Gloria shows the contents of his wife's letter to Lady Gertrud, who subsequently turns away from her husband in shock. Lady Gertrud then secretly meets with Gloria and explains to her how much she loves her husband. Gloria, overwhelmed by this declaration of love, hands Gertrud the letter, which she in turn hands over to her husband.

Although Robert has since resigned from his post as a diplomat, Robert and Gertrud embrace each other and the film has a happy ending.
