Loneliness and Sex and Pity is a German film from 2017 with elements from drama and comedy. The film is an adaptation of the novel of the same name by Helmut Krausser , who also wrote the screenplay. Directed by Lars Monday .

action

The film alternately shows scenes from the lives of 15 residents of a large city, who repeatedly clash in changing constellations.

Hobby beekeeper Robert lives with his wife Maschjonka and their daughters Swentja and Sonja in a row of houses. The marriage has grown cold. The family is currently moving to a smaller apartment where Robert cannot take his bees with him. He lets out his frustration in life in an "anger room", in which one can recreate a scene of his life from props and then destroy them with stabbing weapons in order to reduce negative energies. The Anger Room is run by the former teacher Ecki, who had to give up his beloved job because of accusations of sexual harassment of a schoolgirl; an event that he denies and tries to process therapeutically. The triggering student is what Ecki doesn't know, Robert's 14-year-old daughter Swentja. Mahmud gets to know them and makes offers of a sexual nature to her. Swentja initially responds to this out of curiosity and boredom, later both gradually develop a real interest in each other. Mahmud, who lives in precarious circumstances with his precarious younger brother Faisal, was previously beaten up by the racist policeman Thomas, who in turn tries to win over his colleague Carla, who was plagued by an incident in a refugee home, through constant demonstrations of paternal superiority . For ex-teacher Ecki, a product taken from the range of his regular supermarket is the cause of a fit of rage, the store manager Uwe can only get under control through the use of security guards. Uwe lives in divorce from his wife Julia. While Uwe gets to know and dates the self-confident artist Janine, who had previously portrayed the father of the family Robert as part of an exhibition project, via the Internet, Julia, who has decided on a temporary single life, books the callboy Vincent to satisfy her sex drive. He and his girlfriend Vivian, who is also prostituting and who is also portrayed by Janine, lives in the apartment opposite Ecki's. One of Vivian's customers is the deeply religious teenager Johannes, who is in love with Swentja and visits Vivian in order to come to terms with his burgeoning, deeply confusing sexuality. Robert and Ecki become friends, and little by little Robert notices that he is developing feelings for Ecki. Mahmud takes revenge on Thomas by faking a bomb attack on him, whereupon Thomas suffers a sustained panic attack, which prompts his colleague Carla to turn away from him.

The story takes a dramatic turn when Ecki in a playground where Swentja, Mahmud and Johannes are meeting and where there is an argument between the latter two, exploiting the resulting confusion, and Swentja's little sister Sonja Swentja should watch out, kidnapped to get revenge on Swentja. He later sedated the girl and deposited her in an abandoned church, where Johannes found it and brought it back to Robert's family. While Robert Ecki wants to confess his love, the latter finds out by chance that the former is Swentja's father and kills him in an affect.

In the end credits, the further fate of some of the people involved is briefly presented: Robert receives one final, posthumous appreciation, as the exhibition of Janine's pictures of him is a success. Swentja and Mahmud find each other, and Carla regains her self-confidence and works again in the refugee home.

History of origin

The title Loneliness and Sex and Pity is an allusion to the German national anthem ; with their title he shares tripartite division and meter . For director Lars Montag, Loneliness and Sex and Pity was the first feature film; previously he had only shot films and series for television. For author Krausser it was the third film adaptation of one of his works after The Great Bagarozy and Fette World . The production was financially supported by the Mitteldeutsche Medienförderung , the Filmförderungsanstalt and the German Filmförderfonds . In addition to Berlin, the filming locations were Leipzig and Halle (Saale), in the novel the story takes place in Berlin, and the shooting took place in the Zoo Palast and the Aquarium , among other places . In contrast to the original book, the city in which the film takes place remains nameless, and the ensemble of characters has been reduced from 36 characters to 15. Soundtrack composer Konstantin Gropper works as a singer and songwriter under the project name Get Well Soon .

reception

In his review for Filmstarts.de, Thomas Vorwerk described Monday's figure ensemble as a "potpourri of borderline neurotics" and saw formal parallels in the structure and staging of the film to Robert Altman's Short Cuts , Stanley Kubrick's Barry Lyndon and early Tom Tykwer films. He rated the film as “universally accessible, extremely entertaining satire that is compelling for discussion.” For the Tagesspiegel , Martin Schwickert saw an “inventory of the German state of mind”. He praised a “very stable staffing level”, but criticized a superficial character drawing. Overall, Schwickert rated the film as "not very subtle" and "tiring over time". Manfred Riepe shares Schwickert's assessment in epd film - Montag shows grim situation comedy and “pointed images” in his “arc of images about the soul landscape of the nation”, but has laid out his characters “woodcut-like” and the plot is partly kitschy. Riepe agreed with the judgment of Burkhard Müller , who remarked in the Süddeutsche about the novel that it was “Lindenstrasse for advanced learners”.

Awards

In 2017, loneliness and sex and compassion were nominated in three categories at the German Film Prize 2017 (screenplay, female supporting actor, male supporting actor), but won none. As part of the Romy Awards 2018 , Lars Montag was awarded in the category Best Director Cinema .
