Population development in the city of Freital

The town of Freital was created in 1921 through the merger of the towns of Deuben , Döhlen and Potschappel . These three communities had experienced massive population growth in the past decades due to the coal mining and the settlement of many industrial companies in Plauenschen Grund , which was one of the triggers for the foundation of the city. After 1921, further incorporations followed quickly , which resulted in a further increase in the number of residents of Freetal. Even when mining lost its importance in the region, the city was able to continue to grow thanks to the large number of diverse companies and industrial companies and through incorporations in the 1960s and 1970s. The peak was reached in 1977 with 46,651 inhabitants. Before the Second World War, however, the total number of inhabitants in the places that make up today's urban area was already greater.

After the reunification , many companies closed or lost jobs. People moved from the city to Dresden or to the old federal states. At the same time, the number of births decreased. As a result, Freital continuously lost inhabitants until 1995 and with 37,582 inhabitants on December 31, 1995, it marked the lowest level in the last 30 years. In the following years the population stabilized and jumped again over the mark of 40,000 through a further incorporation in 1999. In 2001 the city had just under 40,000 inhabitants again, by 2008 the number of inhabitants decreased to just under 39,000 and has remained constant at around 39,300 since then. Freital benefits from its proximity to Dresden and the many settlements that have emerged in the peripheral areas. Since 2011, the official population figures are no longer based on the register data from 1990, but on the results of the 2011 census . With the publication of the census data, the number of residents in Freetal had to be revised down by around 900.

Freital is one of the larger Saxon cities with the smallest population decline since 2000 and is in fifth place behind Dresden, Leipzig , Markkleeberg and Radebeul (all with population growth).

The following overview shows the number of inhabitants according to the respective territorial status. The data are census results or official updates from the State Central Administration for Statistics (until 1989) and the State Statistical Office (from 1990). From 1925 onwards, the information relates to the resident population and since 1990 to the “population at the place of the main residence”.

Population projections

In May 2020, the State Statistical Office of the Free State of Saxony published the “7. Regionalized population forecast "(7th RBV) with population forecasts for two development variants. According to this study, the number of inhabitants in Freital should increase slightly but steadily between December 31, 2018 and 2035 (variant 1) or, after a temporary increase at the end of the 2020s, return to the initial level. Its predecessor, the 6th regionalized population projection, was published in April 2016 and assumed a greater increase in the city's population by 2030.

In addition to the State Statistical Office, the Bertelsmann Stiftung forecast the development of the population for all municipalities with more than 5,000 inhabitants in Germany by 2030 as part of the Guide to Commune on the basis of population data from 2009 and 2012. For Freital, an increase in population of 4, 8 percent (approx. 1800 people) predicted.

The following table shows the absolute population development 2015–2030 for Freital according to the respective forecasts at the end of each year, the year of publication of the study in brackets. The forecast value that is closest to the real population is marked in green.
