Elisabeth Schneider-Schneiter (born February 19, 1964 in Basel ; resident in Basel, Lenzburg and Schwendibach ) is a Swiss politician ( CVP ).

Life

A lawyer by profession , she has been a member of the District Administrator of the Canton of Basel-Landschaft since 1999 , which she also presided over in the 2006/07 office year. From 2007 to 2010 she continued to chair the CVP / EPP group in the district administrator. On November 29, 2010, she replaced the resigned Kathrin Amacker in the National Council . Since then she has been a member of the Foreign Policy Commission of the National Council, which she has also presided over since the 2017 winter session. From 2011 to 2015 she was also a member of the Commission for Science, Education and Culture. She is also a member of the parliamentary delegation to the Council of Europe .

At the party convention of the CVP Baselland on October 18, 2018, the 54-year-old was nominated as a candidate for the successor to Federal Councilor Doris Leuthard for the attention of the CVP Switzerland selection committee . The governments of Basel-Stadt and Basel-Landschaft support the candidacy of Elisabeth Schneider-Schneiter and called for a seat for the Basel region in the Federal Council. However, on November 16, 2018, after hearing all four candidates, the CVP parliamentary group decided to present a two-person ticket with the Valais National Councilor Viola Amherd and the Uri government councilor Heidi Z'graggen for the Federal Council election .

In the Swiss parliamentary elections in 2019 , Schneider-Schneiter was re-elected to the National Council.

Schneider-Schneiter is President of the Basel Chamber of Commerce and a member of the Board of Directors of Economiesuisse . She lives in Biel-Benken , is married and has two children.
