Elizabeth Shaw (born May 4, 1920 in Belfast , † June 27, 1992 in Berlin ) was an Irish graphic artist and children's book author.

Life

Elizabeth Shaw was born in Ireland in 1920 ; In 1933 the family moved to England. She studied at the Chelsea School of Art in London from 1938 to 1940 . In 1940 she did military service and worked as a mechanic until 1944.

In 1944 she married the sculptor and painter René Graetz (1908–1974). She moved with him to Berlin-Zehlendorf in 1946 . The couple had two children, the daughter Anne Schneider (* 1948) and the son Patrick Graetz (1950-2006).

In Berlin she worked first for Ulenspiegel , then mainly for Eulenspiegel and from 1950 also as a cartoonist for New Germany . In 1959 she portrayed 43 members of the Akademie der Künste (stone lithographs). She illustrated poems by Bertolt Brecht , wrote her own children's books and illustrated them. Among the works she wrote herself were adaptations of traditional English subjects, e.g. B. " Goldilocks " or " The three pigs ". Further illustrations were created for books by James Krüss , Gerhard Holtz-Baumert , Heinz Kahlau and Rainer Kirsch .

For her work, Elizabeth Shaw received the GDR Art Prize , the Hans Baltzer Prize, the Gutenberg Prize of the City of Leipzig and the Käthe Kollwitz Prize of the Berlin Academy of the Arts . Nevertheless, their relationship with the GDR was not free of tension. During the time of the German-German division, she commuted between the political systems and even gave up her GDR citizenship in 1968 in order to be able to travel more easily, but kept her residence in Pankow in East Berlin until her death in 1992 .

“The split between East and West caused widespread schizophrenia. The people lived in the East, integrated into its social mechanisms and rituals, and in the evening they turned on the television at home and watched West. "

- Elizabeth Shaw

In 1998 the elementary school on Grunowstrasse in Berlin-Pankow was named after her.
