The name comes from Frisian and was derived from the name Adelheid . Elke is the short form of the pet form to Adelheid: Adelheid → Adelke → Elke

At the beginning of the 20th century, the name Elke was hardly common. From the mid-twenties onwards, its popularity rose rapidly. From the mid-thirties to the mid-forties, the name was among the ten most common female first names of the respective year. Then its popularity gradually declined at first, quickly falling in the mid-1970s. Since the mid-eighties, hardly any newborns have been named Elke.
