Elle Macpherson (born March 29, 1964 in Killara , New South Wales ; actually Eleanor Nancy Gow ) is an Australian model and actress . She is also known by the nickname The Body . From 2010 to 2013 she hosted Britain's Next Top Model .

Life

After fourteen years of marriage, Macpherson's parents separated and their mother married Neil Macpherson a short time later. She changed her previous surname, Gow, to Macpherson for her stepfather. Macpherson spent a lot of time playing ballet in her childhood. When she was eighteen she began studying law at the University of Sydney . She dropped out after a year when she was discovered by a modeling agency while on vacation in Aspen, Colorado .

Macpherson's breakthrough as a model came in 1982 in the women's magazine Elle . There she was seen repeatedly on the cover for the next six years. In 1985 Macpherson married the French photographer Gilles Bensimon. The marriage lasted until 1989. In 1986 she gained greater prominence through photos in the US magazine Sports Illustrated . In 1994 she was seen alongside top models like Kathy Ireland and Rachel Hunter on the cover of the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition . In the same year she undressed for the May issue of the men's magazine Playboy . In 1995 she voted People Magazine among the 50 Most Beautiful People . In 1996 she founded the Fashion Café in New York City together with four other top models ( Cindy Crawford , Naomi Campbell , Christy Turlington and Claudia Schiffer ) .

In 1994 she made her film debut in the film Seduction of the Sirens at the side of Hugh Grant and Tara Fitzgerald . For the role she had to gain 10 kilograms. In 1996 she starred in the love story Jane Eyre by the Italian director Franco Zeffirelli . This is followed by minor roles in the films When Lucy Jumps (1996), Love Has Two Faces (1996) and the action film Batman & Robin (1997) alongside Hollywood stars such as Arnold Schwarzenegger , George Clooney and Uma Thurman . In 1997 she had her first major role in the film drama On a Knife's Edge .

In 1999 Macpherson appeared in five episodes of the American sitcom Friends . In the series, she was Joey's roommate Janine Lecroix .

In 1998 their first son was born in New York, whose father is the Franco - Swiss banker Arpad Busson. Macpherson's second son was born in 2003.

Macpherson is very prominent in her native Australia. In 1999 she became the first Australian star to be featured on a postage stamp.

Macpherson advocates healthy eating in public. She initially canceled an invitation to the Vienna Opera Ball in 2019 after the menu proposed there did not meet the requirements of a vegan diet .
