Emil von Kessel

Emil Friedrich Moritz von Kessel (born March 21, 1804 in Potsdam ; † November 8, 1870 there ) was a Prussian major general .

Life

origin

Emil was a son of the Prussian Lieutenant General Gustav von Kessel (1760–1827) and his wife Angelika, née Schock (1778–1857). The later Prussian infantry general Bernhard von Kessel (1817–1882) was his younger brother.

Military career

Kessel visited the Berlin Cadet House and on October 13, 1822, was transferred to the Kaiser Alexander Grenadier Regiment of the Prussian Army as a Second Lieutenant . Just two weeks later he was transferred to the 1st Guards Regiment on foot . Here he rose to the position of captain and chief of the 9th Company by mid-April 1844 . With this unit, Kessel participated in the suppression of the barricade fighting in the capital in March 1848 , before he commanded the Leibcompanie from May 9, 1848 to September 6, 1850 as chief. Then he was promoted to major in the staff of the 10th Infantry Regiment in Wroclaw . In mid-October 1856 he was promoted to lieutenant colonel and on December 4, 1856, he was commander of the 1st battalion in the 18th Landwehr Regiment in Posen . Under position à la suite of the 1st Guards Regiment on foot, Kessel was appointed commander of the fortress Weichselmünde and Neufahrwasser on January 18, 1859 . In the same capacity he came four months later after Cosel and received on 18 October 1861 the character as a colonel . With the award of the patent for this rank, Kessel was appointed commander of Glogau on April 15, 1862 and on the occasion of the festival in January 1863 with the Order of the Red Eagle III. Excellent with a bow. On November 12, 1864, he took his leave with the character of major general and the statutory pension . With his pension, Kessel was put up for disposal on March 22, 1865 .

family

Kessel married on July 21, 1844 in Kassel with Julie Freiin von Canstein (1808–1895), widowed Baroness von Buddenbrock . The later Prussian Colonel General Gustav (1846–1918) and their daughter Margarethe (1848–1878) emerged from the marriage.
