Gustav Friedrich Gottlob von Kessel (born November 18, 1760 in Klein-Elguth, Oels district , † September 18, 1827 in Berlin ) was a Prussian lieutenant general and most recently the commander of the Invalidenhaus in Berlin .

Life

His parents were Ernst Moritz von Kessel (1706–1767) and his wife Helene Friederike, née von Tschirschky (* 1717) from the Prostram family. His father was a lord of Ober-Schönau and a state deputy for the Oels district.

Military career

Kessel came to the court of Prince Friedrich Johann Karl von Carolath-Beuthen in 1770 as a page . From there he went into Prussian service and came on February 12, 1776 as a corporal in the infantry regiment "von Stechow" . With this he took part in the War of the Bavarian Succession . At a parade, the king noticed his size and therefore he was transferred to the 1st Battalion of the Guard on March 24, 1780 . There Kessel was promoted to second lieutenant until November 1787 . In the First Coalition War he fought in the sieges of Mainz and Landau as well as in the battle near Trippstadt . On February 21, 1795 he was promoted to lieutenant prime minister.

As a staff captain , he was initially the leader of the personal company and was promoted to captain to company commander on March 1, 1799 . On October 9, 1800, he was promoted to major. In the Fourth Coalition War , Kessel fought in the Battle of Auerstedt , took part in the retreat to Prenzlau, where he was taken prisoner and made inactive. On April 23, 1807 it was exchanged and returned to the reorganized guard. On March 18, 1808, he was appointed commander of the 1st Foot Guards Regiment . In this position he rose to lieutenant colonel in May 1809 and received a gift of 1000 thalers on July 15, 1811 for his success in training the new guardsmen. On February 8, 1812, Kessel was promoted to colonel with a patent from February 20, 1812 . On January 20, 1813, he was released from his position as regimental commander and, with a salary of 2,000 thalers, was entrusted with running the business as commandant of Potsdam.

On February 17, 1813, he was promoted to major general. On March 7, 1813, Kessel was commissioned to form twenty reserve battalions, and on July 1, 1813, he received another order, this time for four reserve battalions in Upper Silesia. In addition, he was inspector of eight garrison battalions and on September 16, 1813 commander of Breslau. On August 28, 1814, he was then transferred back to Potsdam as commandant. On December 2, 1815, he was finally appointed inspector of the Landwehr in the government department of Breslau. In recognition of his services, Kessel received the Iron Cross on a white ribbon on March 5, 1816 . He was also promoted to lieutenant general on March 30, 1817 and appointed commander of the house of invalids on May 6, 1819. In addition, he received a bonus of 2000 thalers from the king. The house had suffered a lot in the wars of liberation and Kessel now set to work to restore it to good condition; for this he received 5,500 thalers from the king. In 1825 he also received the service cross and on February 28, 1826 the Order of the Red Eagle 1st Class with Oak Leaves. He died on September 18, 1827 in Berlin and was buried in the Invalidenfriedhof .

He married Angelike Schock (1778–1857), a daughter of the director Schock, on March 28, 1799 in Potsdam. The couple had several children:
