End Times is a zombie horror film by Carolina Hellsgård , which celebrated its world premiere on September 7, 2018 as part of the Toronto International Film Festival . The film is based on the comic of the same name by Olivia Vieweg , which she also adapted for the film. In the form of a dystopia , the film tells of a post-apocalyptic world in which humanity was overrun by zombies and in which Weimar and Jena are probably the last places of human civilization thanks to a protective fence. When 22-year-old Vivi and 26-year-old Eva find themselves defenseless in the open between the cities, they have to take up the fight against the undead together. Original and staff

The film is based on the comic of the same name by Olivia Vieweg , which she also adapted for the film. The 72-page comic was created in 2011 as a diploma thesis for the Bauhaus University and appeared in 2012, initially re-assembled on 46 pages in larger A4 format and mirrored in Japanese reading direction in three sequels in the Comix magazine, and in the same year in the original form as a book at Schwarzer Turm .

The film was directed by Carolina Hellsgård . It is her second film after her highly acclaimed debut Vanya . Michael Meyns from the Gilde deutscher Filmkunsttheater remarked in his review that in the finished film you can see that Vieweg, who also wrote the script, has no experience whatsoever with this subject. The story begins bumpy, then the parameters are briefly established and the threat suggested. It was only when Vivi and Eva wander around alone in no man's land that the end of time found its real core and the actual themes of the film became clear, according to Meyns: “A new form of living being embodies this mixture of humans and plants, a harmony that, or so it seems at least to be suggested might be the solution to the problems. It's a shame that these ideas are not being explored any further, but will soon give way to the well-worn patterns of zombie films . ”Hellsgård ultimately turned her film, which is basically a genre film, into a hybrid being.

The film is a ZDF / ARTE co-production with Grown Up Films. The responsible editors were Christian Cloos for ZDF / Das kleine Fernsehspiel, Doris Hepp for ZDF / ARTE and Birgit Kämper for ARTE. Endzeit received funding for young talent from the Mitteldeutsche Medienförderung in the amount of 450,000 euros, project film funding from the German Film Fund of 331,900 euros and production funding of 500,000 euros from the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and Media .

Cast and filming

The main roles Eva and Vivi were cast with the actresses Maja Lehrer and Gro Swantje Kohlhof . Trine Dyrholm plays a woman who looks like a mixture of people and plants. Yûho Yamashita , Barbara Philipp and Marco Albrecht can also be seen in other roles .

Filming began on August 1, 2017 and ended on September 7, 2017 after 28 days of shooting. The filming locations include the two locations Jena and Weimar , as well as Heldrungen and the Leibis-Lichte dam in Thuringia and the Saxon Kirchberg. Leah Striker was the camerawoman .

In Germany, the film was approved by the FSK from the age of 16. The reason for the release states that the film combines genre-typical elements of the zombie film with ecological approaches and has numerous dramatic and drastic moments that are never played out speculatively. Nevertheless, the gloomy setting and the depictions of violence could overwhelm young people under the age of 16. The two protagonists were suitable as figures of identification and, despite all the horror, ultimately experienced a positive personal development.

Ulrich Kriest from the film service writes that it becomes clear that the director Carolina Hellsgård and the script and comic book author Olivia Vieweg do have fun staging the bloody genre clichés, but they only put the permanent threat from the undead as a " basso continuo “The plot to turn to more interesting things and enable the two very different protagonists to initiate the“ buddy complex ”.
