Efeutute ( Epipremnum aureum ), and the Golden Efeutute called, is a species of the family of the arum family (Araceae). Cultivated forms of the species are popular houseplants .

Naming

The Efeutute was first described as Pothos aureum by Linden & André in 1880 . Epipremnum differs from the genetically closely related species Scindapsus pictus in that Scindapsus species only have one ovary in their ovules, while Epipremnum species have several of them. In the ornamentals literature, however , the terms Pothos aureus , Epipremnum pinnatum , Rhaphidophora aurea and Scindapsus aureus are often used synonymously. Today, however, Epipremnum pinnatum is again regarded as an independent species.

description

Efeutute ( Epipremnum aureum ), feral climbing a tree trunk; the older the plants get, the larger the leaves become

The Golden Efeutute is a climbing plant that grows up to heights of 20 meters on trees or other supports by means of aerial roots and develops up to 4 cm thick shoot axes . This perennial herbaceous plant is evergreen . The alternate leaves are stalked and have a heart-shaped leaf blade, completely divided in young plants, but irregularly divided in older plants, up to 100 cm long and 45 cm wide (young leaves much smaller, typically less than 20 cm long).

The flowers are formed on a spadix up to 23 cm long with a spathe (but they rarely bloom).

distribution

Originally the Golden Efeutute only occurs on the island of Moorea from the Society Islands. However, it is now found wild in many tropical countries. The following are given as distribution areas: Bangladesh , India ( Andaman Islands ), Myanmar , Thailand , Vietnam , People's Republic of China ( Hainan , Hong Kong ), Taiwan , Japan ( Ryūkyū Islands , Ogasawara Islands , Bonin Islands ), Malaysia (the peninsula, Sabah and Sarawak ), Singapore , Indonesia ( Java , Maluku , Nusa Tenggara , Sulawesi , Sumatra ), Philippines , Solomon Islands , Vanuatu , New Caledonia , New Guinea , Australia ( Queensland ), Marshall Islands , Palau , Fiji , Tonga , Cook Islands , Western Samoa .

use

The Golden Efeutute is a popular houseplant , of which there are some varieties with additional white, yellow or light green leaves ( variegation ). In private and public buildings, it is often used as an ornamental plant because of its low maintenance requirements and attractive foliage . In tropical countries it can be found in many parks and gardens and tends to run wild there.

As a houseplant, the Efeutute can grow horizontally or vertically. The plant also thrives in very shady places in the room, where many other indoor plants perish due to lack of light. The Efeutute is usually propagated vegetatively by head or stem cuttings or by lowering .

The plant purifies the air of benzene , formaldehyde , trichlorethylene , xylenes and toluene .

Use in the aquarium hobby

Similar to window leaves / Monstera or Lucky Bamboo / Lucky Bamboo Dracaena braunii, the Efeutute is used as an emersed plant outside the basin, whose horizontally and vertically growing water roots, as heavy consumers, remove excess phosphates and nitrates from the aquarium water , inhibit the formation of algae and thus significantly improve the water quality. Another positive side effect is that hatched fry and fry find food, protection and shelter in the dense root system.
