Erik Lawrence Burgdoerfer (born December 11, 1988 in East Setauket , New York ) is an American ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Hershey Bears of the American Hockey League since July 2019 and plays there on the position of defender .
Career
Burgdoerfer played in his junior years between 2005 and 2006 first with the New York Apple Core in the Eastern Junior Hockey League , from where he moved to the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in summer 2006 . In parallel to his studies, he also played for the university's ice hockey team in ECAC Hockey , a division in the game operations of the National Collegiate Athletic Association , for the next four years . The defender made four solid seasons there, in which he never delivered more than seven scorer points per season. Therefore, he was not included in the NHL Entry Draft , but was on the ECAC All-Academic Team in 2010.
After completing his studies, Burgdoerfer - like his twin brother Greg , with whom he had played together at Apple Core and at the RPI - received a trial contract with the Bakersfield Condors from the ECHL in March 2010 . While Greg Burgdoerfer ended his ice hockey career in the summer of 2010, Erik Burgdoerfer received a permanent contract with the Condors and was part of the team for the following three game years. In October 2013, the defender finally received a contract with the cooperation partner Oklahoma City Barons from the American Hockey League , who continued to use him in Bakersfield. Nevertheless, he came to three missions with the OKC Barons during the 2013/14 season . In the summer of 2014 he finally moved permanently to the AHL, but as a free agent to the Hershey Bears .
At the Hershey Bears, the American was part of the permanent staff for the following two seasons up to summer 2016 and recommended himself for higher tasks during this time, so that in July 2016 he was contracted by the Buffalo Sabers from the National Hockey League . Although Burgdoerfer was there mainly in the squad of the AHL farm team Rochester Americans , but he also came to his first missions for the Sabers in the NHL during the season. In July 2017, he again changed employers as a free agent and was henceforth in the service of the Ottawa Senators . These put the defensive player at the Belleville Senators in the AHL, whose team captain he has been since the beginning of the 2018/19 game year . Since his move in the summer of 2017, he has also returned to the Canadian capital club in the NHL, before returning to the Hershey Bears as a free agent in July 2019. There he signed a one-year contract.
