The Ernst-Barlach-Gymnasium , EBG for short , is one of the three high schools in the North Rhine-Westphalian city of Unna . The school is named after the German sculptor Ernst Barlach .

history

The school was founded in 1925/26 as " Oberschule in Aufbauform" in the premises of the former teachers' college in Unna (established in 1907). From 1928 the institution " Oberrealschule in Aufbauform i. E. “led. The aim of the secondary schools was to support capable students from rural areas or socially disadvantaged groups. In 1931 the first six students passed their Abitur at the school. After the Second World War , as part of the reorganization of the school system, it was converted into the “ Aufbaugymnasium Unna”. In 1964 the Pestalozzi-Gymnasium, previously housed in the same building, moved out. Sextan classes (fifth grade) were first established in 1973. The Ernst-Barlach-Gymnasium received its final name in 1974 after it was transferred to municipal sponsorship. In this context the building was modernized; several extensions were added from 1975 (including administration wing, natural sciences). In 1976, students from the advanced high school took their Abitur for the last time, after which this profile was limited to grades 7-10. In 1992 the construction branch finally ended. In 1981 the "Association of Friends and Supporters", which is still very active today, was founded; Mechthild Kebekus was elected as the first chairman, Dieter Storkebaum was her deputy. It promotes the educational work and the cultural life of the school materially (equipment, projects) and ideally. Today the EBG Unna is a three- to four-class, basic high school with the G8 course . It will return to G9 with the 2019/20 school year .

School profile

The school program of the Ernst-Barlach-Gymnasium Unna is based on the values of justice, non-violence, sustainability, tolerance and international understanding under the motto “Sustainability in social responsibility”. Pupils, teachers and parents regularly sign a contract-like “Education and Upbringing Agreement” to substantiate these values. In the tradition of the advanced high school, the EBG is also open to qualified pupils from other types of school, especially junior high school students who switch to upper secondary level after the 10th grade . The main pedagogical emphasis is on individual support, media and methodological skills, environmental education and social learning . Art and culture (“Forum School Culture” with the annual EBG cultural festival) in the sense of a comprehensive understanding of education and upbringing form a further focus. Joint teaching ( inclusion ) of disabled and non-disabled students has been practiced for years in accordance with the requirements of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia .

The EBG Unna became known through great sporting successes at the national level in handball . Various youth teams under the direction of Peter Steinig won the German championships in 1973 (A-Youth), 1978 (C-Youth), 1980 (B-Youth), 1982 (A-Youth) and 1983 (A-Youth). In addition, there is the annual ski leisure time since 1982 during the Easter holidays and a football team .

particularities

Profile class "all day"

As the only grammar school in the city of Unna, the Ernst-Barlach-Gymnasium has been offering a full-day profile class since 2010. In year 5 this includes support and technical and social support until 3:40 p.m. (Monday to Thursday) or 1:05 p.m. (Friday); in years 6 and 7 the number of long days is reduced to 3 and 2 respectively.

Subject offer

The range of subjects and their differentiation are broad. In class 5, a “learning to learn” lesson was set up, and every child receives IT lessons in classes 5 and 6. As a second foreign language from class 6, Spanish is available in addition to Latin and French, as well as from class 8 onwards also offered "Representation and Design", the student company, GLOBE and the band project. For the implementation of the state program "No qualification without connection (KAoA)", which prepares for study and career choices, a fixed subject hour has been set up in grade 8.

In addition to the usual subjects, advanced courses in educational science and sport are regularly available for the upper level. Latin, French and Spanish can be selected as new foreign languages. The professional and study orientation has a traditional focus, especially in the upper school, since 1986 a student internship has been carried out.

Compact hour model

The school day is divided into two 90-minute “compact lessons” (7:50 am to 9:20 am, 9:40 am to 11:10 am), followed by further 45-minute school hours. The compact lessons are related to the educational concept of the EBG and enable various teaching methodologies that would hardly be realizable in 45-minute hours.

Project and method days

During the introductory phase of the upper level, there are three project and two method days for the entire year. They are used for interdisciplinary work on complex topics or for the presentation and imparting of methodological skills in selected subjects.

Foreign contacts

The EBG maintains European and international contacts abroad and visits for schoolchildren, including after

Hastings ( United Kingdom ), all 7th grade trip • Muszyna ( Poland ), partner school (exchange class 9 and EF) • Bardejov ( Slovakia ), partner school (exchange class 9 and EF) • Costa Rica

For decades there was also a student exchange with the César Franck College in Palaiseau , France , a twin town of Unna, Huddersfield in England and Janesville in the United States .

Room and building situation

The school consists of nine connected wings and a separate pavilion. Below that are two gyms ; the triple gymnasium was inaugurated on May 14, 1982; two break rooms, a large auditorium, the cafeteria and the afternoon care. A total of around 40 classrooms are available, including three biology, two chemistry, two physics, two IT, two art and two music rooms. In 2006 the self-learning center "mittpunkt" was inaugurated, which includes a library, numerous student workplaces, relaxation opportunities and, since 2010, the career orientation office. Furthermore, can be found in addition to the administrative offices, a large library, an archive, an open classroom, kiosk, two school yards, a phenological garden, a school parking with weather station and numerous works of art on school property, including in the school parking of "Icarus" by Joseph Baron and the sculpture “I”, which the art teacher Konrad Sieben designed with students in the 1980s. A photovoltaic system is installed on the roof of the school. Extracurricular locations for physical education are the Herder Stadium and the swimming pool in Königsborn .
