Eurocup 2015/16

EuroLeague 2016/17

The EuroCup 2016/17 was 15 . Playing time of the EuroCup in men's club basketball. It should not be confused with the FIBA Europe Cup , which is hosted by the continental association FIBA Europe .

In contrast to previous events, similar to the overriding EuroLeague 2016/17 competition, there was for the first time a name sponsor with the Greek food company Vivartia and its snack brand 7DAYS, so that the full name of the competition is 7DAYS EuroCup .

The title was won for the first time by Unicaja Málaga from Spain .

Pre-season importance and controversy

FIBA Europe, including the majority of its national member associations, tried to boycott the EuroCup and sanction participating clubs in favor of the new Basketball Champions League competition they had initiated . For this reason, the planned number of participants from 24 clubs, which had already been reduced to the previous event, had to be reduced by a further four clubs to 20 participants in the main round after the group draw.

It is therefore controversial which of the two competitions, EuroCup or Basketball Champions League, is the second most important in the 2016/17 season after the EuroLeague . Although many renowned teams from the most important European leagues as well as former long-time EuroLeague participants are represented in the EuroCup, not a single national champion takes part, while 16 champions are in the Champions League. One factor that speaks for the Basketball Champions League and against the EuroCup is the variety of countries from which the participating clubs come. While clubs from only nine different nations take part in the EuroCup, there are 31 different nations in the Champions League. This in turn means a higher performance density in the EuroCup.

mode

At the EuroCup, 20 teams took part in the preliminary round instead of 36 teams as in the previous year. The first round was the round-robin tournament mode English round robin played with home and away in four groups of five teams. The athletic last and most unsuccessful team in each preliminary round group was eliminated, while the other teams reached the second group stage of the 16 best teams.

Here, too, the game was continued in four groups with four teams each, with the teams staggered according to preliminary round placement, so that no group opponents in the preliminary round also played against each other in the intermediate round. The first and second placed teams in each intermediate round qualified for the quarter-finals, while the remaining intermediate round teams were eliminated.

From the quarter-finals onwards, the play-off mode " best of three " continued, with the better placed team in the intermediate round initially having home rights. The team that first scored two wins in a play-off series advanced to the next round.

Participating teams

The draw for the first group stage took place on July 7, 2016 in Barcelona ( Spain ), initially with 24 teams. After various withdrawals of clubs, there were considerable regroupings, whereby the stipulation was that from a sending league only one club per preliminary group competes, which was also possible except for the Spanish ACB league .
