Europabanan (German " Europabahn ") is a supraregional rail transport concept between Stockholm , Gothenburg and Hamburg .

The project is supported by a non-profit organization consisting of municipalities, cities, administrative districts and other regional representatives from Sweden , Denmark and Germany . In addition, the Swedish members are joint owners of the public limited company Europakorridoren AB .

Goal setting

The aim of the association is to work for the expansion of the "European Corridor" - in analogy to the European roads - and thus for a modern, effective, environmentally friendly and sustainable transport system for Sweden, which also brings Sweden and all of Scandinavia closer to Western Europe by connecting the Swedish high-speed network with that of Central Europe.

Europakorridoren AB is essentially planning to build two railway lines. On the one hand the Europabahn and on the other hand the Götalandsbahn . The Götalandsbahn is to run from Stockholm via Jönköping to Gothenburg . The Europabahn is to run from Stockholm via Copenhagen , the islands of Falster and Lolland and via Lübeck to Hamburg. The two tracks are intended for passenger traffic. They will relieve the existing routes, which will then start freight traffic.

The concept includes the construction and expansion of the existing routes in southern Sweden, on the Danish islands of Zealand and Lolland, from Lübeck to Puttgarden , as well as a Helsingborg - Helsingør railway tunnel (HH tunnel) and an approximately 18 km long tunnel under the Fehmarnbelt between Rødby on Lolland and Puttgarden on Fehmarn.

The Swedish Transport Authority has estimated the cost of Götalandsbanan at SEK 105 billion , on the Gothenburg – Jönköping – Södertälje line the trains should be able to travel at 320 km / h. No costs have yet been calculated for the European railway Jönköping – Helsingborg – Helsingør – Copenhagen with the tunnel between Helsingborg and Helsingør.

On May 31, 2019, a new line for 250 km / h was opened between Copenhagen and Ringsted . For the Ringsted – Fehmarnbelt – Hamburg line, the plan is to rebuild the line between Puttgarden and Lübeck in sections and then design it for 200 km / h. The two-track expansion, with the exception of two single-track bridges, and electrification by 2021, when the Fehmarnbelt tunnel is to be completed, has been agreed for the Ringsted – Rødby Færge and Lübeck – Puttgarden lines .
