The European Show Jumping Championships 2021 , also known as the FEI Jumping European Championship Riesenbeck 2021, were held from August 31 to September 5, 2021 in Riesenbeck , a district of Hörstel . This was the 36th time that European championships were held in show jumping .

Award

In the summer of 2019, the European Championships in five disciplines (dressage, para-dressage , show jumping , four-in-hand driving and vaulting ) were awarded to Budapest for the year 2021 . Budapest would have followed the similarly extensive FEI European Championships in 2015 and 2017 . After following the COVID-19 pandemic , the 2020 Olympic Games were postponed to the July / August 2021, the European Championships in Budapest from world Pferdesportverband FEI largely canceled. Only the four-in-hand European championships will still be held in the Hungarian capital in 2021.

The European Equestrian Federation (EEF) approached the FEI in June 2020 with the request to hold European championships in show jumping in 2021. Four months later, the FEI finally awarded the European Show Jumping Championships to Riesenbeck International GmbH, which had applied to hold it.

Sports facilities

The Riesenbeck International equestrian center was opened in March 2015, where Ludger Beerbaum's show stables and stallion station are located. Various horse shows take place here every year, including the German Show Jumping Championships in December 2020 . Riesenbeck was already known as a tournament location, especially in four- in-hand driving . The German driving derby was held there for years and the four-in-hand driving world championships in 2012 .

The Riesenbeck International turf stadium served as the venue for all European championship competitions. Some of the framework tests took place in the neighboring sand stadium.

Time schedule

An extensive sporting supporting program was carried out parallel to the European Championship. The program comprised three CSIs , one each at 3 *, 2 * and 1 * level. The highlight of the framework exams was the Grand Prix von Riesenbeck, endowed with 100,000 euros, at the end of the CSI 3 *, on the Saturday of the tournament.

Competitions

Each nation could send up to five show jumpers, each with one horse, to the European Championship. The fifth pair of a nation serves as a reserve and, if no other rider or horse of his nation fails before the start of the time competition, does not take part in the competitions.

The first test of the individual and team classification was a time competition on September 1, 2021 . The winner of the time jumping was scored with zero penalty points after completing the test. The time difference between him and the other riders was multiplied by 0.5 and thus results in their number of penalty points.

The second test of the team classification, the Nations Cup, was held over two days. The Nations Cup was announced as a jumping competition with two rounds . In the first round on September 2nd, all nations were allowed to start. On the following day, in the second round of the Nations Cup, the ten best teams and the best 50 riders in the individual ranking up to this point were allowed to compete. Based on the addition of the time jumping test and both rounds of the Nations Cup, the decision of the team ranking was made. If there would have been a tie for first place in this addition of the team ranking, a jump-off for the gold medal would have been necessary.

After a day without a championship test, the final test of the individual evaluation was carried out on September 5, 2021. This was a jumping competition with two rounds. The starting field was even smaller here: The 25 best rider-horse pairs were allowed to compete in the first round. All penalty points collected up to this point were retained, so that the overall ranking of the individual ranking included all three championship tests with a total of five rides per participant. If the penalty points were tied for first place, a jump-off for gold would have decided in the individual final.

Intermediate result after the time jump

The course of the time jumping test did not include a triple combination, but instead three double combinations and an open moat. The course enabled the riders to gain time advantages over weaker couples through fast riding and good turns. Fast rides with a jumping fault, which was counted with a four-second time premium, could definitely place in the front part of the ranking.

15 teams were at the start in Riesenbeck, three of them only competed with three rider-horse pairs and therefore had no results available. Two of these teams, Turkey and Austria, found themselves in the last two places after the time competition. The two obstacle errors for Austria's favorite rider Max Kühner and his current successful horse, Elektric Blue P, were surprising . Due to the rather moderate time required, they were the weakest pair of Austrians on the first day. The basic idea behind the hosting of the European Championships in the Olympic year, also to enable other nations and couples who were not at the start in Tokyo to start the championship in 2021, was pursued by many nations in their team line-up. So there were many championship debutants at the start.

For Great Britain it did not go as planned on the first day: While Georgia Tame rode at a very slow pace and ended up behind the other, Emily Moffitt and Winning Good (who had started the Global Champions League in Hamburg less than a week earlier ) underwent three Obstacle error. Switzerland, which in addition to the veteran Steve Guerdat and the 29-year-old European champion Martin Fuchs, had two riders aged 24 and 33 at the start, showed itself in brilliant form - all four riders finished in the top 14 of the test. Even further ahead in the team's intermediate standings were only two nations, but each with a weaker result, which could be canceled: Sweden was able to set exclamation marks after its dominance at the Olympic Games with its "second team", Peder Fredricson and Douglas were in the singles Lindelöw and Rolf-Göran Bengtsson with their horses in places two, three and eleven again.

As in the Olympic Games, the German team was in second place after the first team test in Riesenbeck. André Thieme was the first rider of the team to be given the stipulation to submit a corresponding round with his fast mare Chakaria . The pair showed one of the fastest rides of the test, but due to a jumping error it was not enough for a top placement in the individual intermediate standings. Christian Kukuk chose a fairly brisk pace for his nine-year-old stallion, which in the end was a good four seconds slower than the fastest ride of the day. But the couple made no mistakes. Marcus Ehning stood in for Maurice Tebbel at short notice because his horse had contracted a hoof ulcer . Ehning was not satisfied with his ride, which was very fast but included two obstacle errors. David Will was the penultimate starter of the test and used this to watch the rides of many competitors. Thereupon he succeeded in riding the paths and turns optimally, he finished the test with his gelding C four without mistakes with the fastest time of the day with almost a second advantage.

Intermediate result after the first round of the Nations Cup

In particular, the last third of the course of the first round of the Nations Cup proved to be a challenge: A line with visually striking obstacles (a wall and a steep jump with a conspicuous substructure) was followed by a 90-degree turn on the double combination. After another arch, the course ended with a steep jump. Initially, the individual riders started outside of teams. The positive surprise of this group was the Greek Ioli Mytilineou, who with her stallion Levis de Muze after a top 25 place in the time competition also had no jumping and timing errors in the first round of the Nations Cup. After the second day of the European Championships, she was ninth in the individual ranking.

Then the teams started, which ranked 11th to 15th after the first day. The Czech team, which consisted of only three riders, ended the test without a result because Jan Štětina gave up on his ride. Austria's team result increased by 17 penalty points: while Katharina Rhomberg and Max Kühner made no mistakes with their horses, Alessandra Reich collected plenty of penalty points. Nevertheless, Austria and Great Britain from this group made it into the second round of the top ten teams. The reason for this was the poor performance of Italy and the Netherlands in particular. All Dutch riders made two or three obstacle errors during their rides, so the Netherlands slipped from fourth to eleventh.

In particular, due to the strong individual performance of Andreas Schou (sixth place in the intermediate standings), the Danes, who were seen as outsiders in the run-up, made it into the second round of the Nations Cup. Belgium had two rider-horse pairs with eight penalty points. Although the Belgians moved up to fourth place, they lost a little to the top three nations. The top three consisted of Sweden, Germany and Switzerland on the second day. The overriding team on the second day was Switzerland, three of their four pairs remained free of penalty points.

André Thieme opened the Nations Cup for Germany with a faultless round. On this day, too, Marcus Ehning and his young stallion fell slightly short of their own standards, while Christian Kukuk put himself in an excellent starting position with a zero-fault lap in the individual standings as well. David Will was again the final rider of the German team. He could not keep his lead in the individual classification due to a jumping fault. But Germany stayed in second place, as Sweden fell back to third with three four-penalty rides. Peder Fredricson was one of the riders with four penalty points, so that now the European champion of 2019, Martin Fuchs, took the lead in the individual competition.

Team ranking

In the second round of the Nations Cup, course designer Frank Rothenberger succeeded in setting up a course that challenged the participants and yet did not provoke bad images, no pair of participants came up with a result of more than 16 penalty points. It was particularly tricky again at the end of the course: the final line could not be traversed straight, but required two gallop changes: Obstacle 11 (an overbuilt water) was reached from a right turn, then it was the double combination in a slight left turn (in which it made some mistakes) to then overcome the final oxer after a slight right arc.

France and Ireland held sixth and fifth place with eight penalty points, and France in particular benefited from the possibility of the deleted result. After the mistakes of the previous day, Belgium went into the second round strengthened and dominated it: All Belgian riders made no mistakes with their horses - an achievement that no other team achieved. Already after their third rider it was clear to Belgium that they would have a medal. This was also due to the fact that Sweden's team recorded three rides with eight penalty points and had to fear in the meantime that they would fall behind Ireland and France. Thanks to the clear round of their final rider Peder Fredricson and a number of mistakes by the final riders of the competing nations, it was enough for fourth place in the final result.

The decision about silver and gold was made between Germany and Switzerland. While the German team started with two flawless rides by André Thieme and Marcus Ehning, the start was less encouraging for Switzerland: Elian Baumann and his gelding Campari Z had convinced as a championship newcomer in the first two rounds of the European Championship and had to compete in the second round of the Nations Cup however, the couple accept three obstacle errors. But with two flawless laps by Bryan Balsiger and Martin Fuchs, Switzerland kept its good starting position, while Christian Kukuk made his first mistake at these European championships. This was the decisive factor in the performance of the two final riders: David Will and his gelding C Vier fell a pole so that Steve Guerdat had to defend a lead of a little more than one jumping error for Switzerland. Guerdat and Maddox also fell a pole, but it stayed that way until the finish line. Thus Switzerland won the gold medal. The German team had held second place over all three rounds of the team competition and thus won silver.

Individual evaluation

The second round of the Nations Cup clearly mixed up the order in the individual competition: From the group of the individual starter, Ioli Mytilineou and her 10-year-old horse Levis de Muze confirmed the good impression of the previous day: again without mistakes, the Greek moved up to fourth place. In contrast, a number of well-placed riders made mistakes: Rolf-Göran Bengtsson fell 13 places with eight penalty points, Elian Baumann even fell from fourth to 28th place with 12 penalty points. Baumann thus missed the individual finals. Steve Guerdat stayed in the top ten despite a jumping error, Peder Fredricson pushed himself close to the medals again thanks to a clear round - to fifth. Before the two rounds of the individual final, Pieter Devos, André Thieme and Martin Fuchs were third, two and one.

Even on the first round of the individual final, Frank Rothenberger remained true to his style of the week: The difficulties were primarily concentrated in the second half of the jumping course. The penultimate line consisted of a rather narrow triple combination, which was followed by a slight left turn of the moat and then an oxer. With their horses, the riders had to make the change from shortened gallop jumps to a 4.10 m wide moat that was clearly to be ridden forward. Nevertheless, there were hardly any problems on this line. All the more mistakes took place on the last line: After a 180-degree turn, a double combination followed, the wall parts from a previous course this weekend was integrated as a substructure, a further red oxer and finally a steep jump over 1.60 meters high , which was built with a moat.

In this first round of the individual final there were 24 participants. Marcus Ehning and Bryan Balsiger each made two more drops with their horses, so that they missed the entry into the last round of the top twelve pairs. The furthest leap forward in the intermediate ranking was made by David Will, who made no mistakes with his gelding C four , while several pairs after him made mistakes. He rose from eleventh to sixth place. With a jumping fault, Christian Kukuk took right behind Will. Peder Fredricson confirmed his favorite position and made no mistakes with Catch Me Not S. He moved into the top three after Pieter Devos also made an obstacle error. Ioli Mytilineou, whose horse Levis de Muze once again jumped outstandingly, also moved into the top three . However, a time error let them fall behind Fredricson.

At the front of the field, André Thieme and his mare Chakaria stayed clear for the third lap in a row. Martin Fuchs made a jumping fault on the Oxer behind the moat with his young gray gelding Leone Jei . Fuchs was fourth in the last round of the European Championships, Thieme was in the lead.

The last course to be ridden at the European Championships, in which 12 rider-horse pairs were still allowed to start, was significantly shorter than the previous courses with only ten obstacles. He started with two lines, each with an oxer and a steep jump at a distance, followed by the triple combination. The rest of the course had almost no lines with obstacle sequences, the obstacles were connected by curves and turns. The errors spread over the entire course.

The first fault-free ride of this second round of the individual final came from Nicola Philippaerts with his mare Katanga van het Dingeshof . The Irishman Eoin McMahon, who lives in Riesenbeck, had an obstacle error and a time penalty with his 15-year-old horse Chacon , but he was still able to work his way up two places. Steve Guerdat and his 10-year-old stallion Maddox had to accept several jumping errors, most recently on a wall-like, very colorful plank obstacle (obstacle 7), before the ride on the penultimate obstacle was finished: Maddox refused the first attempt and also wanted the second attempt not overcome the white Longines wall. Guerdat dropped out.

The 29-year-old Norwegian Victoria Gulliksen had worked her way into the second round of the individual finals with rather calmer, time penalty points, but good rounds at this European championship. There she made two jumping faults with the chestnut gelding Papa Roach . Nevertheless, she finished in the top ten of the final result. Christian Kukuk crossed the finish line flawlessly with his gray stallion Mumbai . This was the last clear round of these European championships, Kukuk narrowly missed a medal in the end. David Will was on the preparation area with C four , while the second lap was already running, fell after a practice obstacle that had jumped off too early. He went to the start anyway. In the first half of the course Will and C Four made jumping errors. In the second half of the jumping course, the couple found their way back together better and finished the competition in seventh place.

With Pieter Devos and his mare Jade van de Bisschop two more poles fell, with Martin Fuchs there was an additional jumping fault. After four rounds without mistakes, the European Championship ended unhappily for Ioli Mytilineou: She came in unsuitably for the triple combination, so that her stallion Levis de Muze could no longer jump properly and jumped into the steep jump. Mytilineou decided not to ride the combination for each horse. She just jumped an already overcome obstacle and gave up. With that the bronze medal was already certain for Martin Fuchs, the two following pairs had a lead over Fuchs over just over a jumping fault.

Peder Fredricson and Catch Me Not S made this jumping fault, and their way to the last obstacles was a bit time-consuming. This led to a time error that made him fall behind Martin Fuchs. A pole fell at André Thieme and Chakaria , too . But Thieme kept his nerve and brought his mare to the finish line without any further mistakes. With this, André Thieme was certain to win the individual gold medal at his only second championship start, a few weeks after the less than ideal participation in the Olympic Games in Tokyo .
