The table tennis Europe Top 16 2018 Cup was on 3 and 4 February at the Swiss Montreux instead. The defending champions were Dimitrij Ovtcharov for men and Li Jie for women , who both reached the final but lost to Timo Boll and Bernadette Szőcs, respectively.
The reigning individual European champions Emmanuel Lebesson and Melek Hu were qualified, as were the top 14 European players in the world rankings of December 2017 (without taking into account the European champions). Since there was no player from the host Switzerland among these 15 players for men and women, the host was allowed to name a further participant, otherwise the last place would also have been awarded via the world rankings. The wildcards went to Lionel Weber and Rachel Moret . Kristin Lang was not listed in the world rankings in December due to inactivity, but was placed in 15th place due to her previous placement. Marcos Freitas canceled shortly before the tournament, so that the substitute player was not determined by the December world rankings (then Paul Drinkhall would have received the place), but by the ETTU, who chose the 17th of the December European rankings , Kou Lei, who had finished fourth the year before and was the best-placed non-qualified European in February. An association was allowed to be represented by a maximum of four players.
Unlike in previous years, there was no group stage. Instead, the participants played in the knockout system from the start . The semi-final losers played a game for third place, the top three automatically qualified for the World Cup .
