Eutelsat 31A (originally e-Bird, then Eurobird 3 and Eutelsat 33A ) is a communications satellite for television and radio services as well as broadband Internet services operated by the operating company Türksat . The company TELES also uses this satellite for their SkyDSL internet service. This enables data transmission rates of up to 16 Mbit / s for downstream . It is equipped with four coverage zones for Europe and Turkey and is in geostationary orbit at 31 ° East.
technology
Eurobird 3 should provide Europe-wide two-way broadband access to the Internet , as DSL is not available in many areas . The costs are significantly higher than with DSL connections. Special transceivers and satellite dishes are required to use the satellite .
begin
The satellite was launched under the name e-Bird on September 27, 2003 from the Kourou spaceport in French Guiana, South America, on board an Ariane 5 launcher . In addition to e-Bird, another communications satellite (the Indian Insat 3E ) and the first European lunar probe SMART-1 were also on board the rocket as the main payload .
Positions and Renaming
At the beginning of 2005 the satellite was renamed Eurobird 3 by the operator Eutelsat. On March 1, 2012, Eutelsat unified the names of its satellites around the brand name and renamed the satellite to Eutelsat 33A .
On December 23, 2013 it was announced that the satellite would be used by Türksat in the future . So that Türksat does not lose the rights of use at the orbital position 31 ° East, Eutelsat 33A was set to the position 31 ° East and was given the new name Eutelsat 31A .
reception
The satellite can be received in Europe and Turkey . The transmission takes place in the Ku band .
