The Protestant parish church in Güttersbach , a district of the community Mossautal in the Odenwaldkreis in Hesse , is the oldest church in the southern Odenwaldkreis and was mentioned as the parish church of the surrounding villages as early as 1290. It stands as a cultural monument under monument protection .

history

The church, which already existed in the High Middle Ages, is similar in age to the nearby Güttersbach moated castle , which probably remained unfinished or was destroyed after a short time. The parish of Güttersbach once included Hiltersklingen , Hüttenthal , Olfen , Gras-Ellenbach and Dürr-Ellenbach , and at times also Unter-Mossau .

The slightly retracted west tower is the oldest part of the church, its base dates back to Romanesque times. The core of the single nave nave dates from the early Gothic period and underwent late Gothic changes. The retracted rectangular choir, dated 1480, and the sacristy attached to the side have a star vault . The church has a pulpit from the early 18th century, an organ from 1740 and a stained glass window in the sacristy, which was put together from parts of much older stained glass windows in the 19th century and came to the church as a gift from the Counts of Erbach .

The spring is said to have its origin under the church and is contained in the vaulted cellar of the nearby rectory built in the late 16th century to the northeast below the church . The name Quellkirche comes from this source , as it is not only used for the church in Güttersbach, but also for those in Hesselbach , Schöllenbach and Falken-Gesäß .

In the former churchyard there is a late Gothic crucifix from 1503 and two old tombs from the 18th century. The quarry stone wall around the churchyard is still original in the north and west and covered with "bishop's hats".

At the cemetery linden tree in the churchyard behind the church choir is a round stone bench with a monolithic stone table. According to legend, it was supposed to have been the place of execution of a Fehmgericht , but more likely it was the shark court of justice in the village that belonged to the center of Beerfelden within the Freienstein office , and from the 16th century to the Michelstadt office .
