Everything Sucks! ( English for “Everything is shitty!”) is an American television series that premiered on the video-on-demand provider Netflix . The idea for Everything Sucks! comes from the writers Ben York Jones and Michael Mohan, Jones also plays Mr. Stargrove, the head of the video group, in the series. The series parodies teenage sitcoms from the 1990s. The first season consists of ten episodes and was released on February 16, 2018. In early April 2018 it was announced that the series had been discontinued after a season.

The series mentions several things and people that were popular in the 1990s, such as showgirls , lava lamps , VCRs , Mallrats , The Jerky Boys, and the discussion whether the lyrics of Alanis Morissette's song Ironic contain any examples of irony . In addition, the soundtrack of the series consists of many songs from the 1990s, among others by artists such as Oasis , Des'ree , Nirvana , Radiohead and Blind Melon .

In addition to the actors' achievements, the series was praised above all for its realistic portrayal of a young person who questions their sexuality and begins to be interested in a classmate.

action

The series takes place in 1996 . The setting is the fictional Boring High School in the town of the same name . The focus is on the members of the AV Club (Film-AG) and the Drama Club (Theater-AG). Many of these students are considered outsiders , which is why they do not have a great reputation in school. In addition to the academic life, the series also focuses on the characters' private lives, which often deal with the (love) relationships between the characters.

Luke O'Neil and his two friends McQuaid and Tyler Bowen are freshmen at Boring High School in Oregon . On their first day, they sign up for the AV Club. When the Drama Club cannot perform its planned play because the props were destroyed, Luke suggests that the two clubs make a film together that will be shown to the whole school.

At the AV Club, Luke meets Kate Messner, the school principal's daughter. He falls in love with her and the two become a couple. However, Kate is only in this relationship to counter rumors that she is homosexual . When she realizes she's actually attracted to girls , she breaks up with Luke and gets together with Emaline, a bisexual member of the drama club, in the final episode of the season . This was left by her friend Oliver, who secretly went to New York .

Another relationship develops between Sherry, Luke's mother, and Ken, Kate's father. Sherry, a flight attendant in, was abandoned by her husband when Luke was seven, and Ken's wife died of suicide when Kate was five. Sherry is summoned to Ken's office because Luke is detained after breaking school rules . During the conversation, Sherry and Ken discover some similarities and they begin to meet regularly, which they keep secret from their children for the time being.

The season ends with a cliffhanger : Luke and Kate are having dinner with their parents when Leroy, Luke's father, suddenly appears in the doorway.
