Wolfgang Fahrian (born May 31, 1941 in Klingenstein , today in Blaustein ) is a former German football player . Germany coach Sepp Herberger put the former goalkeeper of TSG Ulm 1846 at the FIFA World Cup 1962 one in Chile in all four games of the German team. From 1962 to 1964 Fahrian played ten times for the German national football team .
Career
Clubs, 1951 to 1976
Ulm, 1952 to 1964
Wolfgang Fahrian began playing football in the club at the age of ten at TuS Klingenstein, joined TSG Ulm in 1846 in 1952 and successfully passed through the various age groups of the youth department of the "Spatzen". As an A-youth he won - still as a defender - the Württemberg championship twice. He was also appointed to the South German youth team. At the age of 18 he was retrained as a goalkeeper. With his talent and ambition as well as intensive training, also in addition to the units in the club, Fahrian developed tremendously. In addition, the previous goalkeeper of Ulm in the Oberliga Süd, Manfred Paul , had switched to Karlsruher SC for the 1960/61 season and the long-time substitute goalkeeper Artur Kießling could not fill the gap. Already on the fourth match day (September 4, 1960) the 19-year-old talent made his debut in the soccer Oberliga Süd in the home game against FC Schweinfurt 05. Coach Fred Hoffmann relied on the young Fahrian in the fight for relegation. Over the course of the season, this was characterized by above-average responsiveness, jumping power and spectacular parades on the line. He made a name for himself straight away despite the relegation of Ulm to the 2nd South League - the "Spatzen" missed relegation with only one point behind their competitors Schweinfurt and Waldhof. In 1960/61 Fahrian guarded the goal of Ulm in 24 games. He managed with his team with the second place in 1961/62 in the 2nd League South, the immediate return to the league. The sporting highlight was his appointment to the national team for the game on April 11, 1962 in Hamburg against Uruguay and his participation in the 1962 World Cup in Chile.
In the last year of the first-class league in 1962/63 , the young national goalkeeper of the World Cup days in Chile, with promoted Ulm in the southern league, took a respectable eighth place in the table. He played all 30 competitive games alongside the two goal-scoring attackers Helmut Siebert (22 goals) and Manfred Ruoff (20 goals). To the great surprise of those interested in football, the courted goalkeeper did not join any of the 16 nominated Bundesliga clubs for their debut round in 1963/64, but played with Ulm in the second -rate regional football league south . In 32 games - Jürgen Modic represented him in six games - he was able to demonstrate his class, but Ulm was not a serious contender for a top spot in the south. There Hessen Kassel, Bayern Munich and Kickers Offenbach drew their circles, Ulm took eighth place. For the second season of the Bundesliga , 1964/65, Fahrian signed a licensed player contract with Hertha BSC and moved with Willibert Kremer (Viktoria Köln), Jürgen Sundermann (RW Oberhausen), Michael Krampitz (Hertha Zehlendorf) and the returning Berlin Kurt Schulz (FC Luzern) to the Spree.
Berlin, Munich, Düsseldorf and Cologne, 1964 to 1976
The first Bundesliga match on August 22, 1964 led Hertha to become the defending champion, 1. FC Köln . With the four newcomers Fahrian, Sundermann, Kremer and Schulz, the team of coach Jupp Schneider managed an unexpected 3-2 away win. After the preliminary round, Hertha was in ninth place with 15:15 points. After an unsatisfactory second half of the season - because of the sporting misery, Jupp Schneider was replaced by Gerhard Schulte on March 9, 1965 - she ranked 14th in the table with 25:35 points and managed to stay one point ahead of Karlsruher SC. Fahrian had played 25 league games and was represented by Hans-Jürgen Krumnow in three and Wolfgang Tillich in two games. In the player rating, he was noted with an average value of 2.48 (together with Werner Krämer and Klaus-Dieter Sieloff ) in second place behind the leading Hans Tilkowski with 2.41 in the season ranking. In the season analysis it was noted that “Hertha finally had a great man between the posts with ex-national goalkeeper Fahrian, without whom the relegation could hardly have been prevented in terms of sport”. In October 1964 he had additional inserts in the two games in the trade fair cup against Royal Antwerp (2: 1/0: 2).
After the season, Hertha BSC was denied membership of the top division due to significant violations of the licensed player statute and was forcibly transferred to the regional league. Especially the excessive bonus payments to Fahrian were decisive for the exclusion of the Berliners. The DFB personally imposed a fine and a twelve-month ban on him. This was later reduced by half and Fahrian was able to play 17 games in the second half of the season and into the promotion round in the Berlin Regionalliga 1965/66 with Hertha - she won the championship with a goal difference of 136:25 and 58: 2 points move to the Bundesliga. Fahrian was against the competitors Fortuna Düsseldorf, FK Pirmasens and Kickers Offenbach in all six games in the Hertha goal, but could not force promotion.
For the 1966/67 season he accepted the offer from the new German champions TSV 1860 Munich . Coach Max Merkel hoped that Fahrian's class would put pressure on the “goalkeeper” Petar Radenković , who was celebrated by fans and the media, in terms of discipline . There was "pressure" with the "lions", but against the authoritarian trainer. After the elimination in the European Cup against Real Madrid in November 1966, this culminated in the dismissal of the Austrian on December 10, 1966. Fahrian was caught between the "millstones" during Merkel's argument with parts of the team, with Merkel's dispute with Radenkovic playing the main role. After the 0-3 derby defeat on October 15, 1966 against FC Bayern, he was no longer used in the first half of the season. When coach Gunther Baumann lost the first game under his responsibility on February 18, 1967 in the stadium on Grünwalder Straße with goalkeeper Fahrian 2-0 to Schalke 04, the season for the man from Ulm was over. From then on Radenkovic again guarded the gate of the "lions". In the first round of the national championship competition against Omonia Nicosia, Merkel relied on the fishing skills of the "Black Panther" in September 1966. After only eight Bundesliga appearances, the Munich chapter was over for Fahrian.
At Fortuna Düsseldorf , where he made a fresh start, Fahrian made 64 appearances in two regional league seasons from 1967 to 1969. He proved he was still a top goalkeeper; unfortunately that was not the case for Fortuna. In the first year Bayer 04 Leverkusen, RW Essen and RW Oberhausen were clearly superior to Fortuna in the table - with 14:20 points in the away games they were not competitive - this also happened to the top three RW Oberhausen and RW Essen in 1968/69 and VfL Bochum too. Although the Fortunes got ten points more than last year, they didn’t get more than fourth place. In the summer, the former national goalkeeper surprised with his move to Cologne namesake SC Fortuna . President Jean Löring's club was promoted to the Regionalliga in 1967 and had finished the 1968/69 season in 13th place.
From the 1970/71 series under coach Ernst-Günter Habig at Fortuna Cologne, things went up. In November 1972 Habig was replaced by Martin Luppen and the Loering-Elf moved after the runner-up - with 85:29 goals in 34 games, the defense directed by Fahrian had the best record - behind RW Essen in the promotion round. There the Cologne team prevailed over FC St. Pauli, Mainz 05, Karlsruher SC and BW Berlin (again with the clear best defense) and were promoted to the Bundesliga. Fahrian had been in goal in all eight promotion games and only conceded five goals. He played a total of 132 games with Fortuna Köln in the Regionalliga West from 1969 to 1973 .
After his promotion, President Loering decided to forego the services of the football teacher Martin Luppen and instead relied on the skills of the former athlete Volker Kottmann . After the 17th match day - Fortuna ranked 16th with 13:21 points - the time for Kottmann was up. Shortly before the start of the second half of the season (3: 5 home defeat to Borussia Mönchengladbach), the president also took command of the training field and handed over the training management to former decathlon Olympic champion Willi Holdorf on January 21 (Fortuna was in last place) . After the 33rd matchday, Fahrian and colleagues were on the saving 16th place with 25:41 points, one point ahead of Wuppertaler SV . The WSV won one point on matchday 34 with a 2: 2 at VfB Stuttgart, Fortuna Köln lost the last game on May 18, 1974 at Kickers Offenbach with 4: 0 and rose tied with Wuppertal because of the poorer goal difference from the Bundesliga from. Fahrian was the only Fortune to have played all 34 games.
Two seasons followed (1974/75 and 1975/76) in the new 2nd Bundesliga with 50 games before Fahrian ended his career in the summer of 1976 due to a meniscus damage. He played his last game in the 2nd Bundesliga on February 15, 1976 in a 3-1 home win against Westfalia Herne. At the side of Peter Boers, Roland Hattenberger, Walter Müller, Rolf Dohmen, Friedhelm Otters, Johannes Linßen, Lothar Wesseler, Helmut Bergfelder, Otmar Ludwig and Rolf Bauernkämper, he completed his 16-year active career (Oberliga Süd, 2nd League South , Regionalliga Süd, Bundesliga, Regionalliga West and 2nd Bundesliga).

National team, 1961 to 1964
The young goalkeeper from Ulm first came into contact with the DFB in the 1961/62 season. National coach Sepp Herberger used the talent in the test match of the DFB selection on September 6, 1961 against a selection from Luxembourg in the second half for Fritz Ewert from Cologne . On October 8, 1961, the goalkeeper of the second division behind the defenders Friedel Rausch and Jürgen Kurbjuhn guarded the goal of the German junior national team U23 at the international match in Gelsenkirchen against Poland. Herberger took the young man from Ulm to the bench for the World Cup qualifier against Greece on October 22nd. This was followed by further test games in the national team against club teams (Karlsruher SC, combination Cologne / Mönchengladbach), a game of the regional selection of southern Germany against western Germany on March 3, 1962 and the final test game on March 21, 1962 in Saarbrücken between a DFB-A selection and a B selection. Then the 20-year-old goalkeeper from the 2nd League South made his debut on April 11, 1962 in Hamburg in the last international match before the 1962 World Cup tournament in Chile against Uruguay in the national team. He convinced with an impeccable performance and flew to Chile with the DFB selection in May 1962.
Since the previous goalkeeper Hans Tilkowski was supposedly the clear number one in the squad, the Fahrian nomination of the national coach for the opening game on May 31st in Santiago against Italy surprised not only the ranks of the Chile drivers, but also the reporters and fans in Germany . In the goalless draw on his 21st birthday against the dreaded Italian internal storm with Gianni Rivera , José Altafini and Omar Sívori , Fahrian paid back Herberger's trust with performance. In Group B, the games against Switzerland (2: 1) and Chile (2: 0) followed, with the German team taking first place in the group with 5: 1 points and 4: 1 goals. The defense was bombproof, there was still room for improvement on the offensive. On June 10, the quarter-final match against Yugoslavia (again in Santiago) took place. Fahrian came to his fourth World Cup appearance and showed - like the entire defense - also in the hard-fought entry into the semi-finals against the dangerous inner storm with Dragoslav Šekularac , Milan Galić and Josip Skoblar an excellent performance. However , he had no chance to defend against the shot from outside runner Petar Radaković in the 86th minute to make the game 1-0 for Yugoslavia.
In the last league year 1962/63, national coach Herberger considered the Chile goalkeeper in three international matches: on September 30, 1962 in Zagreb against Yugoslavia (3: 2), on October 24, 1962 in Stuttgart against France (2: 2) and on May 5, 1963 in Hamburg during the game against reigning world champions Brazil, which ended in a 1: 2 defeat.
Fahrian, who stayed with Ulm in the first Bundesliga year 1963/64 and thus remained second class, was called up to the national team twice this season. After the 3: 4 defeat on April 29, 1964 in Ludwigshafen against vice world champion Czechoslovakia, his career in the DFB selection ended after ten international matches. As a Hertha goalkeeper, he came back in goal on September 15, 1964 in a test match. He was a substitute for the international match against Sweden on November 4, 1964 in Berlin. The suspension by the DFB after the 1964/65 season and the subsequent unfortunate change of club prevented his international career from continuing.
Players agent
The trained heating fitter remained connected to football. After his playing career, he built up an agency for the mediation of players, which he has successfully operated for many years and which has earned the reputation of a serious specialist. In the last few years, the DFB-licensed players' agent was the managing director of Rogon Sportmanagement GmbH & Co. KG and headed the Rogon office in Cologne.
