action

season 1

Karma and Amy are in tenth grade together at Hester High School in Austin, Texas . The two have been best friends since kindergarten. Karma would do anything to be popular. Amy doesn't care too much and she'd rather stay unknown. After being mistakenly outed as a lesbian at a party by Shane, they decide to take on the role. As a result, her fame increases significantly and many classmates support her in becoming the first lesbian couple in her school to become prom queens. Over time, Amy develops real feelings about karma, but she begins an affair with Liam Booker. At Amy's mother's wedding, Amy confesses her love to Karma, which is why Karma ends the fake relationship. At the same time, however, Liam also ends his relationship with Karma because he feels cheated by her because she was not honest with him. Shane tells Lauren's friend about the pills she's taking. It later turns out that these are hormone pills since Lauren was born intersex . Towards the end of the wedding, Amy and Liam, both drunk, meet and sleep together.

season 2

The next morning they wake up hungover and later agree not to say anything to Karma because they don't want to hurt her. Liam has quite a problem with that at the beginning. Amy, on the other hand, still doesn't want to let go of karma, even though karma makes it clear to her that she only wants her as a best friend. At an event at Liam's house that Amy is attending to dissuade Liam from telling Karma, she meets Reagan, a waitress. During an argument in the presence of those present, Liam reveals to Amy and everyone else that his sister is actually his mother.

On her birthday, Karma receives a letter from Liam, which Amy later tries to withhold from her because she doesn't want to lose Karma to Liam. However, she later gives it to Karma, which ultimately tears it apart as proof of their friendship. Because of this, the two have an argument. As a reconciliation, Amy calls Liam with Karma's cell phone and makes sure that the two become a couple. When Karma learns that Liam and Amy have slept together, she is very upset and she breaks up with Liam. Later, however, the two begin to sleep together again, but Liam cannot forgive Karma.

Karma's parents sell hash cookies and are arrested, but are released after Liam asks his father (grandfather) to do so. In return, Liam starts an internship at his company. However, Karma's parents lose a lot of money and have to sublet their house to the new school principal and his son Felix. From there on, Karma lives with her parents in the juice truck in their garden.

During an MMA training session involving Liam, Shane, Lauren and Theo, Shane recognizes MMA champ Duke Lewis Jr.'s abs from a picture of a gay app. While Duke uses Shane as a test subject, Theo tries to prove that he is right and that Duke is homosexual. However, the tattoo Shane tries to prove this with is absent. After the training session, Lauren kisses Theo, who first replies, but then quickly leaves the room and leaves Lauren hurt. Meanwhile, Shane apologizes to Duke for wanting to come out as gay. This reveals to Shane that he is really gay, but doesn't want to come out yet. However, the two have sex with each other. Shane outed Duke without his knowledge, when Duke found out that he broke up with Shane.

At an underground party with Shane and Lauren, Amy meets Reagan again and there is another spark between the two. Also at the party, Lauren mistakenly takes an ecstasy pill because she believes it is a headache pill. After the mistake is discovered, she crawls into the cloakroom, depressed and does not want to come out. Eventually Theo can get her out of the cloakroom. Amy and Reagan become a couple.

However, it turns out Theo was a police spy to spy on the school's students and staff. He breaks Lauren's heart, but the two get together again, but hide this, otherwise Theo could lose his job.

In July 2013, MTV ordered a pilot for the series. After shooting it, Faking It was ordered as a series in October . The idea for the series came from Carter Covington. He was inspired by stories he learned as a consultant for an LGBT hotline. The premiere of the series on April 22, 2014 had around 1.2 million viewers and thus achieved values similar to Awkward - My so-called life in the opening act.

On June 9, 2014, the day before the finale of the first season, MTV announced the order for a second season, which will consist of ten episodes. With 1.4 million viewers per week, the series is the most successful new start of the year on the station. The second season aired on September 23, 2014.

In Germany, Faking It has been broadcast in the original version with subtitles on the paid channel MTV since September 7, 2014 . The free TV premiere took place on March 21, 2015 on nicknight .

In April 2015 it was announced that the last ten episodes of the second season will air from August 31, 2015. At the same time, the series was extended for a third season. This ended on May 17, 2016.

reception

Due to the representation of the pretended lesbian relationship, the series was already criticized in the run-up to the broadcast. Hope Schreiber from Complex magazine described the series as MTV's latest mistake. The truth is, girls who come out lesbian would be popular in the sense that they would be constantly harassed by guys who wanted to sleep with them. In the online magazine Autostraddle , which is primarily aimed at a lesbian readership, the idea that girls pretend to be lesbian in order to get attention, while in real life people are sometimes bullied for it, was dismissed as a frustrating stereotype, after which the Series described as better than its trailer and "kinda cute". Rebecca Nicholson wrote for the Guardian that Faking It was much better and also more self-critical than the initial situation would suggest.
