In 1857 Joe Whitford was sent by his employer James Fergus to find a suitable place for a new settlement. The site found was named Fergus Falls in memory of its client .
In 1870 George B. Wright bought the site in order to establish a regional economic center here. He built a dam across the river to generate hydropower for a sawmill. In March 1872 Fergus Falls received a parish charter and got the official parish status "Village". At the same time, the place became the administrative seat of Otter Tail County.
In March 2017, the journalist Claas Relotius published a detailed report on Fergus Falls in the news magazine Der Spiegel . In December 2018 it turned out that Relotius had invented large amounts of content for this and other reports. He had falsely claimed that there was a sign at the entrance to Fergus Falls with the words “Mexicans Keep Out” (“Mexicans, stay away”). Two residents of the city then listed eleven misrepresentations about the city on the Internet. Der Spiegel apologized to the residents and again sent a reporter to the city, who let the residents have their say in his article.
