Fiertés - Mut zur Liebe (original title Fiertés) is a French mini-series consisting of three episodes, which premiered on May 3, 2018 on the Arte channel . The series spans three decades, with a focus on societal views on homosexuality and AIDS . The three years in which the series takes place in 1981, 1999 and 2013 have special meanings for the French LGBT community (see the plot section). The title is derived from the Marche des fiertés (German: March of the proud), which corresponds to the German Christopher Street Day . The idea for the series came from the filmmaker Philippe Faucon, who wrote the scripts for the episodes together with José Caltagirone and Niels Rahou.

action

1981

17-year-old Victor works on his father Charles' construction site . He starts talking to his colleague Sélim, the son of the foreman Sofiane. Although Victor is with a girl named Aurélie, he is attracted to Sélim, who is the same age. One day, when Victor and Sélim are exchanging tenderness, they are watched by Charles. Although he describes himself as liberal and supports the socialists , he cannot accept Victor's homosexuality. He dismisses Sélim and tells Sofiane about his son's affections. The bond between the two young men then breaks and Victor is bullied and ostracized at school. Because he feels lonely, he goes to a popular meeting place for homosexuals and steps on Serge, a man who is a little older than himself. At the end of the episode, the two become a couple.

Events: election of François Mitterrand as president, thereby equating the age of consent for homosexual couples to 15 years

1999

Victor is now an architect and still lives with Serge, who was diagnosed with HIV infection . Serge is employed by an LGBT association that works for young homosexuals like Basile. The couple are good friends with Aurélie and occasionally look after her daughter Emma. During his first construction project, Victor meets Sélim at the construction site, who, like his father, is the foreman there. He is married to a woman named Farah and has two children. Victor and Sélim's old love flares up again, and the two begin an affair, which Sélim ends, however, because he does not want to lose his family.

Victor wants to become a father and applies for an adoption . Because this is practically always rejected by homosexual men, he withholds his partner from the social worker and claims to be single. Since she wants to speak to Victor's parents, he asks his father, who is still critical of his son's tendencies, not to betray him. He does not adhere to it and the application threatens to fail. Farah finally settles the matter, as she is close friends with a councilor , but on the condition that Victor and Sélim never meet again.

Event: Introduction of the Civil Solidarity Pact

2013

Diego, Victor's Mexican adopted son, is attending a lycée and will soon be taking his high school exams . He is exposed to homophobic and racist hostility from his classmate Paul. He is threatened with expulsion from school because he had a fight with this student. Victor often argues with his son because he cannot resolve the conflict non-violently. Serge tries to mediate, but takes Diego's side, which Victor cannot understand. After these arguments, Diego often secretly visits his widowed grandfather Charles, at whom Victor is still angry. While visiting a pub, Diego falls in love with Noémie, a law student in her first semester. She is Paul's sister, despite initial difficulties, she and Diego become a couple. At a marche des fiertés , Serge and Diego demonstrate together with the other participants for same-sex marriage . Although Noémi comes from a conservative family, unlike her brother, she supports equality and goes along with them. When Victor arrives, he is beaten up by opponents of the demonstration and seriously injured. After he is released from the hospital, he and Serge decide to get married. Before he got married, Serge died of the consequences of his AIDS illness . Since Victor has promised Serge that he will look ahead after his death, he arranges to meet his friend Pio for dinner.

reception

In the Internet Movie Database, the series achieved a rating of seven out of ten stars based on 162 votes.

“The series Mut zur Liebe resists stereotypes and lets its characters mature, but unfortunately it doesn't dare to do much, it stays chronological, without experiments. Although the dialogues sometimes sound rigid: The actors are believable, and it is thanks to them and the stamina of the director that in the end you really believe you understand Victor's struggle for pride - and with him that of the others.
