main characters

Lyta Alexander

Patricia Tallman (2006)

Lyta Alexander grew up as a P5 telepath in the care of the Psi Corps. During her first visit to Babylon 5 in 2257, she penetrated the mind of Ambassador Kosh to solve the attack on the Vorlon's life. Since that experience she felt more and more drawn to his people. In the following years she turned away from the Psi-Corps. Two years later she unmasked the sleeper personality of her former colleague Talia Winters on Babylon 5 and from then on pursued the goal of getting to the homeworld of the Vorlons, which she finally succeeded in doing. Little by little she realized that her telepathic skills were massively improved there. The goal of the Vorlons was to make it a super weapon for fighting the Shadows. Eventually she became the personal assistant to Kosh and Ulkesh's successor. During this time she assisted the station's crew on many occasions, including the Shadow War and Sheridan's campaign against President Clark. After the Vorlons disappeared, their livelihoods were in jeopardy, which Alfred Bester took advantage of to bring Alexander back to the Psi Corps. In 2262 she fell in love with the renegade telepath Byron and, after his violent death, took over the leadership of the underground organization that worked against the Psi Corps. For some time she went on a research mission with G'Kar to unknown areas of space in order to avoid further conflicts. She died during the telepathic crisis that ultimately led to the demise of the Psi Corps. P. 12 ff.

Zack Allan

Jeff Conaway (1998)

In 2258, Zack Allan, who had been living on Earth until then, was employed by Michael Garibaldi in the security staff of Babylon 5. When the Nightwatch was set up on Babylon 5, he joined this organization. He saw it as an easy chance to get additional weekly wages. Soon, however, he began to doubt the organization's methods and motives, as he was required to report suspicious persons who were then persecuted for their political opinions. He distanced himself from Nightwatch and ultimately helped remove their agents from Babylon 5. In 2261 he was promoted to the station's security chief after Michael Garibaldi left his post at the end of the Shadow War. He held this position for a few years until he returned to earth. In 2280 he visited Babylon 5 one last time to accompany the closure of the station. There he was the last person to see John Sheridan alive. Allan then went to Centauri Prime to work as an assistant to Emperor Vir Cotto. P. 19 ff.

Zack Allen was played by Jeff Conaway .

Marcus Cole

Jason Carter (2013)

Marcus Cole comes from a family of mining entrepreneurs who last lived in the Arisia mining colony. During the Earth-Minbari War, he served in the Earth Force Intelligence Service. After the death of his parents, he took over the family business. In 2259, the mining colony was completely destroyed in an attack by the Shadows, killing Cole's brother. In order to be able to fight the shadows, he began training as a ranger. On Zagros 7, he set up a training camp. Soon after, the Centauri placed a blockade on the planet. Cole overcame them to ask for help on Babylon 5. There he joined the crew permanently. His combat skills and command of the Minbari language made him an important ally in the fight against the shadows. During this time he developed strong feelings for Susan Ivanova, which, however, went unrequited. Ivanova was seriously wounded in a battle against President Clark in 2261. In order to save her life, he transferred all of his life energy to her and sacrificed himself. Ivanova arranged for his body to be frozen in case it is possible one day to save Cole. Some 300 years later, Minbari doctors actually did this. Cole had a clone of Ivanova created, which was implanted with a copy of her memories. He spent the rest of his life with her on a lonely planet. P. 135 ff.

Marcus Cole was played by Jason Carter .

Vir Cotto

Stephen Furst (2009)

Vir Cotto comes from a rather insignificant Centauri family. Since his uncle thought the ambassador Londo Mollari was ridiculous and was of the opinion that Vir was a good match for him, he sent him to Babylon 5 at Londo's side in 2258 Londo trod. Nor did he make a secret of his aversion to murder. Londo ignored Vir's concerns, however. Vir was also appalled by the war and the crimes of the Centauri against the Narn. Eventually he was sent from Londo to Minbar to work as an ambassador. Vir used his diplomatic status to provide humanitarian aid to the Narn, unnoticed by his government. Shortly afterwards he worked again as Londo's assistant and was involved in the plot to assassinate Cartagia in 2261. The emperor died at Vir's hand. After Londo became Emperor a year later, Vir represented the Centauri Republic on Babylon 5. In the following years he tried to free Centauri Prime from the influence of the Drakh with an underground organization. After an open attack on the Drakh forces in 2278 and after Londo's death, Vir fled to Minbar and established a government in exile there as the new emperor. Ultimately, he managed to cleanse his homeworld of the Drakh. P. 149 ff.

Vir Cotto was portrayed by Stephen Furst .

Delenn

Mira Furlan (2006)

Delenn was born a member of the religious caste on Minbar. As a young acolyte, she served under Dukhat, the leader of the Gray Council, of which she soon became a member. Following Delenn's advice, the Minbari first contacted the humans. This ended in a catastrophe that also fell victim to Dukhat. In a rage, Delenn ordered the people to be pursued and wiped out. However, she soon troubled her conscience and tried to stop the one-sided slaughter. Their efforts were unsuccessful until the final battle for the earth on prisoner Jeffrey Sinclair was discovered to be carrying minbari souls. In order to observe Sinclair from now on, Delenn was appointed ambassador of the Minbari to Babylon 5 in 2256. They soon became close friends with him. She later received an offer to become the leader of the Gray Council. But after learning of the return of the shadows, she refused and stayed on the station to fulfill her fate there: Following an ancient prophecy, she underwent a change that gave her almost human appearance. She justified this as a contribution to international understanding. At the same time, however, she wanted to prevent Minbari souls from being reborn in humans, which was triggered by Sinclair's time travel. Through Sinclair, she was privy to the activities of the Rangers from the start and introduced John Sheridan to them in the face of the threat from the Shadows. Although she always tried to find peaceful solutions, she repeatedly proved herself to be a capable commander in combat. From Sinclair she took over the role of leader of the Rangers. Her relationship with Sheridan intensified over time, until they became lovers and eventually a married couple. When civil war broke out on Minbar between the religious and the warrior caste, Delenn was able to peacefully resolve the bloody conflict. She then re-occupied the Gray Council, granting the working class a majority for the first time. She played a key role in founding the Interstellar Alliance, of which she became Vice President in 2262. In the same year she left Babylon 5 with Sheridan to live on Minbar. Their son David was born the following year. In 2279 she replaced Sheridan as President of the Interstellar Alliance and made him run the Rangers. After Sheridan's death, she retired for many years and lived as a hermit. She last appeared in public in 2362 to defend Sheridan's memory. P. 172 ff.

Delenn was played by Mira Furlan .

Stephen Franklin

Richard Biggs (2000)

As the son of a general, Stephen Franklin decided against his father's will to go to medical school. When he was supposed to help in the Minbari-Earth War to develop biological weapons against the Minbari, he refused and destroyed his relevant records. In 2258, he replaced Benjamin Kyle as chief physician on Babylon 5. His unconditional commitment to the welfare of his patients repeatedly got him into trouble with his superiors; for example when he was running an illegal practice for the needy on the ward. He also helped renegade telepaths and Narn refugees from the Psi Corps during the war against the Centauri. His extreme ambition to always achieve the best made him addicted to stimulants. He quit his job to come to terms with himself. After a near-death experience, he decided not to repeat his mistakes and returned as the chief doctor of Babylon 5. With the outbreak of civil war on Earth, he clearly sided with Sheridan. From 2262 he worked as head of the xenobiological research institute on earth. There he later helped fight the Drakh disease, which he himself was infected with. He died many years later, on a distant, unexplored planet. P. 278 ff.

Dr. Stephen Franklin was portrayed by Richard Biggs .

G'Kar

Andreas Katsulas (2000)

As a young Narn, G'Kar witnessed the merciless occupation of his homeworld by the Centauri. After his father was killed by the occupiers, G'Kar joined the resistance that eventually freed the Narn. He embarked on a career as a politician and became a member of the Kha'ri, the supreme council of the Narn. In 2257 he became ambassador to Babylon 5. At first he appeared scheming and usually aggressive and vengeful, especially towards the Centauri people. There were always arguments with Londo Mollari, the Centauri ambassador; however, G'Kar matured over time. When he was finally ready to make his peace with Mollari, war broke out again, in which the Centauri again brutally subjugated the planet of the Narn. After the defeat of the Narn against the Centauri allied with the Shadows, G'Kar and others of his people received political asylum on Babylon 5. During this phase, G'Kar, as the last survivor of the Kha'ri, grew beyond himself. When he forcibly entered Mollari's thoughts under the influence of a drug, he recognized his guilt, but also had to realize that his people had to escape the spiral of violence in order not to perish themselves. G'Kar recognized the truth, withdrew and became a philosopher. He was captured by the Centauri and brutally tortured. Still, he managed to help Londo remove Emperor Cartagia, which eventually brought him and his people freedom. After the war against Shadows and Earth, G'Kar wrote the "Declaration of Principles" for the new alliance that John Sheridan and Delenn had initiated to promote peace and cooperation between peoples. When Londo Mollari, who developed beyond his former self and therefore became the target of scheming Centauri, needed a reliable bodyguard, he asked G'Kar to protect him and G'Kar agreed. Under G'Kar's protection, Mollari rose to emperor and released the Narn into freedom. During the wars, G'Kar wrote a book that offered a new spiritual path for the war-torn Narn. "The Book of G'Kar" was published without his knowledge and was very popular. To both of them he became a friend of Londo Mollari, whom he personally forgave, even if his people of the Narn could not do this to the Centauri for the time being. G'Kar died along with Drakh-controlled Londo Mollari in 2278, strangling each other at Londo's request. P. 285 ff.

G'Kar was played by Andreas Katsulas .

He served as a soldier in the Earth-Minbari War. He later ran a shuttle service on Mars, where he was hired by Jeffrey Sinclair. From then on, both should be close friends. In 2256 he received an offer from Sinclair to become head of security on Babylon 5. In 2258, he uncovered the plot to murder Earth President Santiago, but was seriously injured before he could warn anyone. He helped Sheridan defend Babylon 5 against Clark. In the Shadow War, he was kidnapped by the Psi Corps, which was cooperating with the Shadows. Alfred Bester used Garibaldi's conspiracy detection abilities for his own ends by manipulating his mind. The changed Garibaldi rebelled against Sheridan and resigned. He was eventually hired by entrepreneur William Edgars, who got Garibaldi to hand Sheridan over to Clark and secretly researched a virus against telepaths. After Bester found out about Garibaldi about it, he gave him back his true personality, but left a block in Garibaldi's mind that prevented him from taking revenge on Bester. Garibaldi succumbed to alcohol again. In 2262 he became head of the secret service of the Interstellar Alliance, but soon lost the post due to his addiction. After the withdrawal, he took over the company of Edgar, who had meanwhile been killed, together with his wife Lise, who was Garibaldi's former girlfriend, and married her. Their daughter was born around 2266. In his position as a major entrepreneur, he supported Lyta Alexander's underground organization against the Psi-Corps. Claudia Christian (2009)

Susan Ivanova was born in St. Petersburg and lived in Paris as a teenager. Side effects of the drugs drove them to suicide; which is why Ivanova had a strong distrust of members of the corps. She had poor telepathic abilities of her own and lived in constant worry that the Psi-Corps might discover them. After her brother died in the war against the Minbari, she joined the Earth Forces in 2248. Among other things, she was stationed at Jupiter's moon Io until she took up her post as deputy head of Babylon 5 in 2257. As a member of the Zeta Squadron on Babylon 5, he took part in a hyperspace rescue mission in 2259, during which he had an encounter with a ship of the shadows, which was unknown at the time. His squadron leader did not survive the mission and Keffer moved up. From then on he went in search of the strange ship. Because of his education, Lennier was always a reliable helper and friend to Delenn; so he watched over her during her transformation to the human-Minbari hybrid. His great loyalty to Delenn became love over the years, knowing that she would not reciprocate. When Delenn married Sheridan, Lennier felt increasingly uncomfortable around the two of them and decided to join the Rangers. While accompanying Sheridan and Delenn on a trip to Minbar in 2262, Sheridan was in mortal danger. Peter Jurasik (2013)

Londo Mollari was born on Centauri Prime around 2213 and initially pursued a military career. After being briefly married, he entered into three other arranged marriages. He worked as a diplomat on Earth and was sent to Babylon 5 as the Centauri ambassador in 2256. Two years later he met Morden, with whom he entered into a fateful pact: Unsuspecting that Morden was in league with the shadows, Londo allowed Morden to help the Centauri Republic to regain power. As Londo's standing at the Centauri court rose, the assassination-led attacks on the Narn - the Centauri's archenemies - led to a ruthless war between the two peoples. At the same time, Londo and Lord Refa schemed against Emperor Turhan to help Cartagia to the throne. In the following years, Londo increasingly felt guilty and he dissolved his partnership with Murden. He then turned to Refa. However, Londo forced Refa to end the alliance, as the Centauri were now embroiled in countless conflicts. When Morden poisoned Londo's lover Adira Tyree, Londo believed Lord Refa was the murderer and had him killed. In 2261 he was ordered to Centauri Prime to serve as an advisor to Emperor Cartagia. Londo realized that he was mad and that he was making deals with Murder and the Shadows. Together with his assistant Vir Cotto and G'Kar, who was imprisoned at court, he eliminated Cartagia and freed the Narn homeworld from the Centauri crew. Now appointed Prime Minister, he had murders carried out and the shadows on Centauri Prime destroyed. His former nemesis G'Kar became more and more of his friend and eventually his bodyguard. Soon Londo realized that the Centauri court was also controlled by allies of the Shadow, the Drakh, who embroiled the Centauri in a war against the Interstellar Alliance. In order to end the war, Londo submitted to the Drakh and from then on had to wear a guard who constantly monitored Londo's actions. Appointed the new emperor, he could end the war, but Centauri Prime was already devastated and the people humiliated. In the years that followed, he was only able to evade the guard temporarily by consuming alcohol. In this way he also managed to provide Vir Cotto with information for his resistance against the Drakh. In 2278 he ended his life by being strangled by G'Kar. His guardian made sure that G'Kar did not survive this either. P. 509 ff.

He was temporarily in command of the transfer station at Io and on a destroyer. In early 2259 he replaced Jeffrey Sinclair as commander on Babylon 5. There he met Delenn, who pointed out the threat from the Shadows and introduced him to the Rangers. With the command baton of Babylon 5, he formed a secret circle of resistance against President Clark in order to expose his crimes. One of Sheridan's greatest talents was the ability to unite different peoples for a common goal. So he could raise a powerful army against the shadows. At the height of the war in 2260, his wife Anna reappeared. The shadows had resurrected her, and with a changed personality they had come down on Sheridan to pull him to their side. He accompanied her to Z'ha'dum, but refused any cooperation and was critically injured and was practically dead. Lorien, the "very first", saved him and gave him life energy for about 20 years. Upon his return to Babylon 5, with Lorien's help, he was able to end the war against the shadows, which resulted in the very first leaving the galaxy. Then he turned back to President Clark. He declared the station's independence and successfully defended it against loyal troops. He then led a campaign against Clark with the help of alien forces. During the war, he was captured, tortured and interrogated, but was released. First Sheridan and his multiplanetar fleet liberated the colonies and finally the earth itself. Subsequently, he played a decisive role in the establishment of the Interstellar Alliance, of which he became the first president. He and Delenn were now a couple and they both married. In 2257 he took command of Babylon 5, as he was the only person the Minbari would accept at this post. There he appointed Laurel Takashima as his deputy and Michael Garibaldi as his security chief; in addition, he soon became close friends with Delenn. Towards the end of 2258 he and his partner Catherine Sakai forged marriage plans. However, after the assassination attempt on President Santiago, Sinclair was transferred to Minbar by President Clark to work as the people's ambassador. There he soon became the leader of the Rangers, which now also included humans. Among his recruits was Sakai, who disappeared during a mission in a time warp. In 2260 he received a 900 year old letter from Valen. Following the instructions, he kidnapped the Babylon 4 station together with Delenn, Marcus Cole, Zathras and the command staff of Babylon 5. Together with Zathras, he traveled to Babylon 4 in the 13th century, underwent a change to half a Minbari and led the name Valen, the nearly defeated Minbari in the war against the shadows. He founded the Gray Council and the Rangers. At this time he met the lost Sakai again and both married. After defeating the Shadows, both of them fled into exile, as a relationship of different species was not tolerated by the Minbari. They had children, from whose line Delenn eventually emerged. At the beginning she was a telepath loyal to the Corps, but increasingly doubted its methods and practices. She even helped rogue telepaths on the ward. She received increased telepathic powers and low telekinetic abilities from her former lover, Jason Ironheart, on whom the Psi Corps experimented. A relationship developed between her and Susan Ivanova who became best friends. When Lyta Alexander returned to the ward, she exposed Talia as a sleeper agent. As a level P12 telepath, he embarked on a career in the Thought Police, where his primary job was to hunt down renegade telepaths. He never made a secret of seeing non-telepaths as inferior. In order to achieve the goals of the Corps or his own, he was extremely ruthless and brutal. His work often took him to Babylon 5. In 2260 he briefly cooperated with Sheridan, because he disliked the influence of the Shadows on the Corps and since his lover Carolyn Sanderson was in cold sleep under the influence of shadow implants, and he hoped that Sheridan would find a way finds to help her. A year later he was instrumental in the mental reprogramming of Michael Garibaldi that served to expose William Edgars' plot against the telepaths. During the conflict between the Psi Corps and the telepath resistance around Lyta Alexander in the mid-2260s, Bester was responsible for countless murders and the establishment of concentration camps. After the fall of the corps, he lived on the run. In Paris he lived under an assumed name for a long time; however, he was ultimately tracked down by Garibaldi and security agencies. He was convicted of his crimes and spent the rest of his life in a Geneva maximum security prison, where he died in 2281. P. 63 ff.

Emperor Cartagia

Cartagia was the nephew of Emperor Turhan, whose successor he succeeded in 2259 with the help of Lord Refa. He was prone to narcissism, arrogance, and arbitrary cruelty. He allowed the Shadows to set up a base on Centauri Prime and in return wanted to be elevated to deity. He didn't care that the Vorlons planned to destroy Centauri Prime along with the Shadows. Cartagian behavior led Londo Mollari to oppose the Emperor. Mollari developed a murder plot against Cartagia, allied with G'Kar and set a trap for Cartagia on Narn. Before that, however, he was appointed by the previous and decrepit custodian of the "Great Machine" on Epsilon 3 to be its successor. Draal followed this call and found his new calling in the Great Machine. From there, he assisted the Babylon 5 crew on several occasions. P. 199 f.

Draal was portrayed by Louis Turenne on his first appearance . Then John Schuck took over the role.

William Edgars

William Edgars was the head of a pharmaceutical company and lived mostly on Mars. He was married to Lise Hampton Edgars. Edgars recruited Michael Garibaldi for various services in 2261. When Garibaldi found him on Mars, Edgars convinced him to help capture John Sheridan. That was part of his plan to use a virus to control human telepaths on earth: Edgars saw telepaths as a threat to "normal" people and therefore wanted to gain control over them. The virus he produced would kill any telepath unless he was given an antidote - manufactured exclusively by Edgars Industries - at regular intervals. The capture of Sheridan was supposed to prevent Clark from giving the Psi Corps even more power to put down Sheridan's rebellion. However, since Alfred Bester learned of William Edgars' plans from Michael Garibaldi, whom he had telepathically changed, before the virus was released, he arranged for Edgars to be murdered. The virus was destroyed by the Psi-Corps, the antidote retained. P. 240 f.

William Edgars was by Efrem Zimbalist Jr. played.

Since he could not reconcile this with his conscience, he defected from the Corps in 2258 and gathered many supporters around him. In 2262 John Sheridan gave him permission to live on Babylon 5 with his people. There he met Lyta Alexander and they became a couple. He and his followers unsuccessfully demanded a planet of their own in order to live there in peace. His activities eventually brought on the Psi Corps. The violence escalated and Byron was forced to commit suicide. Lyta succeeded him as the leader of the resistance against the Corps. P. 318 f.

Kosh stayed in close contact with Delenn and opened up to Lyta Alexander, who later became his assistant. In contrast to other representatives of his species, Kosh was also interested in the younger races. He gave secret lessons to John Sheridan from time to time to prepare him for the fight against the Shadows. When Vorlon ships attacked shadow ships on his orders in 2260, he was murdered by the shadows in retaliation. However, he was able to hide fragments of his consciousness in Sheridan's body. When he got into trouble on Za'ha'dum, Kosh asked him to jump into the abyss, which ultimately led to Sheridan's rescue. Kosh's successor as the Vorlon ambassador to Babylon 5 was Ulkesh. Since Ulkesh became a security risk due to the Vorlons' aggressive approach in the late stages of the Shadow War, he should leave the station. There they met the shadows who killed anyone who did not cooperate with them. In the hope that they could bring his family back, Morden submitted to the shadows and became their stooge. On Babylon 5 in 2258 he looked among the extraterrestrial ambassadors for someone who could be manipulated for the purposes of the shadows and finally found Londo Mollari. His greed for power made him enter into a fateful pact with Murder that turned the races of the galaxy against one another and paved the way for the shadows to wage war. However, Londo forced him to give up this partnership by giving Refa part of a two-component poison. Later, when Londo believed that Refa had murdered the only woman he ever cared about, he lured him to the Narn's home planet in 2260, where Refa fell into a trap and was killed by the angry Narn.
