description

The flag of the Cayman Islands is a modified Blue Ensign with the coat of arms of the Cayman Islands in the flight section . The Union Jack in the flag indicates that the islands are British overseas territory .

history

Originally only the Union Jack was used in the Cayman Islands. On April 3, 1957, the legislature of the Cayman Islands requested the bestowal of a coat of arms by the British Queen Elizabeth II. On January 13, she decided that the coat of arms on a white disk on a Blue Ensign should be used for the islands. The flag and coat of arms were finally introduced in this form on May 14, 1958, but not through a separate law until 1993. In 1998 the law was revised and changed in 2002. Originally, the use of the flag was only permitted for trade and commerce. On January 25, 1999, the UK Department of Defense removed the white disc from the flag and enlarged the coat of arms.
