The city is located at 38 ° 59 '36 "North, and 84 ° 38' 33 West. (38.993225, −84.642602). The city extends over an area of 25.6 km², of which 25.5 km² Land and 0.1 km² of water.

history

Around 1800, the first pioneers settled in the area, which were initially simply called "Crossroads", as the later Burlington, Ridge and Union Road crossed on their way to different farms. The Ridge Road was later to become known as the so-called Dixie Highway .

After the first school was established in 1816 , the investment of a wealthy Covington attorney Thomas Madden in 1821 gave the community the next boost to attain town charter . Madden bought a large farm in the area, in his honor the parish was renamed Maddentown , Maddentown was soon mapped as a city - but after a year Madden sold to Jacob Conner, making Maddentown Connersville .

Eight years later, the city council petitioned the governor for a post office, only to be surprised to learn that it would hardly work with the existing name. A town already existed called Connersville in Harrison County . As a result, you were forced to vote in a vote on the name and chose Florence with 16 out of 25 votes. According to the unconfirmed legend, the first name of his wife Jack Conners made the difference. The establishment of the post office was celebrated the following year.

In 1835 the first town church was built, which was also to serve as a hospital during the war of secession . A year later, Florence was able to book the advantage of the first stagecoach station south of Covington, which was noticeable in the increased settlement of hotels, blacksmiths and wheelwrighters .

In 1851 the first town hall , which was also used as a school, was built on Main Street. Today the building houses a law firm. A branch of the Baptist church also settled in Florence in 1855.

During the civil war in 1862 there was also fighting in the area around the city. A larger division of the Confederation , commanded by Brigadier General Henry Heath , whose main troops camped at Corinth and Snow's Pond near Walton, raided some Union Army guards near the town church. One soldier was killed and 18 men seriously wounded.

In 1869 something like a chamber of commerce was established in the city.

From 1896 , the Northern Agricultural Fair Association set up a regular four-day fair in autumn, after which the area was named and used as a fairground . In the period that followed, some groups of Sinti visited the place where barn dance evenings were held for general entertainment.

The long-time private schoolmaster John Uri Lloyd immortalized Florence in 1900 with his popular novella: Stringtown on the Pike . But with the establishment of a public school organized by Professor AM Yealy from 1901 in a building with two classrooms and two teachers, Lloyd was faced with competition that was to have seven teachers and six classrooms by 1931.

It was not until 1904 that a real city-bound bank was founded on Main Street with the Florence Deposit Bank, which three years later became the scene of a western-style revolver duel:

John Meeks, who had just been fired as city marshal , shot and killed his successor, James Albert Clutterbuck, in the course of a heated argument.

With the establishment of electricity (1917) and gas supply (1926), the city took further important steps in the course of modernization. But it wasn't until 1931 that the city got a proper water pipe and sewer system and a little later the first volunteer fire brigade thanks to the efforts of a certain Albert Hue, who donated the money for the first fire engine, an old Ahrens Fox from 1913.

With the construction of a bypass road in 1941 Main Street was relieved. After the end of World War II , the city benefited from the first commercial flights from nearby Cincinnati Airport.

In 1956 the population counted 1,320 souls and in 1958 the city was classified as a "Third Class City", which, loosely translated, equates to a downgrading, but was primarily an administrative measure. Shortly thereafter, the Northern Kentucky Industrial Foundation set up an industrial park in Florence that was soon to provide jobs for 8,000 people.

In addition, in 1959 a racecourse for pedigree horses was set up in the Latonia Race Track, which was renamed Turfway Park in 1985.

With the "Florence Y'all" investors built the first mall in 1973, in which Sears & Roebuck , among others, also settled. In 1979 the Booth Hospital opened, later renamed St. Luke West. A year later, the city celebrated its 150th anniversary with a big event that turned into the annual Florence Y'all Festival.

In 1986/1987 the city acquired two larger pieces of land in order to enable the construction of today's Government Center, the construction of which did not begin until 1996, but would see its completion in 1998, and the Florence Nature Park as a recreational area. At the beginning of the 1990s, as part of the administrative reform, the number of council seats was reduced by half to six seats.

The city also appeared as an investor in other respects: In 1991 it bought the recreational complex "World of Sports", which seemed attractive above all because of the golf course , and in 2001 the old property of Joshua Zimmerman Tanner, which is operated as an open-air museum.
