history
The airport opened in 1942 as a United States Navy base on land leased from the city of Atlantic City. In 1958 the federal government bought the airport as a test site for the newly founded Federal Aviation Agency (FAA), an 84 acre area on which the reception building has been located since the 1960s remained the property of the city.
On October 29, 1978 Allegheny Airlines first took regular flight connections from Atlantic City. In 1992 the South Jersey Transportation Authority (SJTA) took over the terminal building from the city, and in 1958 it also took over repurchase rights agreed between the city and the federal government. In 1998 the SJTA took over operational control of the airport from the FAA. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey has been responsible for some areas since 2013 , including marketing .
business
The Atlantic City International Airport is in regular service exclusively on the budget airline Spirit Airlines approached. There are direct connections to destinations within the United States. The FAA operates the William J. Hughes Technical Center at the airport. The task is research and development as well as evaluation for numerous areas of civil aviation.

Incidents
- On April 28, 1968, a Douglas DC-8-31 had an accident at Atlantic City Airport . The four crew members who completed a training flight survived the incident. The aircraft was written off as a total loss.
- On July 26, 1969, the crew of a Boeing 707-331C operated by Trans World Airlines simulated an engine failure on a training flight by switching engine number 4 to idle. When a missed approach was to be initiated when the decision altitude was reached, neither the landing flaps nor the landing gear could be retracted. The crew switched off the hydraulic systems without reactivating engine no. 4. She lost control of the machine, which rolled to the right and began to descend. The plane hit the ground and went up in flames, the five-man crew was killed (see also Trans-World Airlines flight 5787 ) .
