history

According to a legend, the Visigoth king Rekkared I founded the city around 550 AD. The first documentary mention was made in 1150 in a document from King Sancho of Navarre .

From June to September 1638, the city was besieged in vain by French troops under the command of Henri II. De Bourbon, prince de Condé and almost completely destroyed. A Spanish relief army was able to destroy the French on September 7, 1638 in the battle of Fontarrabie and liberate the city.
