For Those About to Rock (We Salute You) is the seventh internationally released studio album by the Australian hard rock band AC / DC . It was released in 1981 and was the third and final collaboration with producer Robert John Lange .

title

The title of the album is a variant of the phrase "those who are about to die salute you", a translation of the Latin saying " morituri te salutant " ( the doomed greet you ), with which the Roman gladiators in the arena supposedly die Emperor greeted. The album title could thus be freely translated as "The rock consecrated greetings" .

Musical style

On this album, AC / DC continued to follow the line of simple hard rock with which they had become so famous a year earlier. This style consists of uncomplicated, rough power chords by rhythm guitarist Malcolm Young , the well-known guitar solos of his brother Angus and, last but not least, the pressed, characteristic vocals of Brian Johnson .

reception

With this album, the band could not build on the success of the now legendary previous album Back in Black , but the record landed at number 1 in the US album charts for the first time. There it has so far been awarded four times platinum for over 4 million copies sold. In the other countries, however, the record could not reach the top position like its predecessor, but was always placed in the top 10. In Germany it reached number 2 and was listed in the top ten for several months. A platinum award followed. In Great Britain it was only honored with gold and placed in 3rd place. For Those About to Rock (We Salute You) was also placed in the top 10 in Australia (3rd place), Austria (7th), Norway (6th place) ) and in Sweden, where it reached number 9.

The title song, accompanied by the thunder of cannons on stage, reached number 15 as a single in Great Britain. This is often referred to as "the AC / DC anthem " and usually marks the end of your concerts. For Those About to Rock remains the only album of the group that no music video was made for.

The striking and unusual title of the album has already been parodied several times. Examples are the DVD For Those About to Rock by Strapping Young Lad , the 7 "EP For Those About to Mock by the American punk band Bracket and the album For Those About to Rot by To Separate The Flesh From The Bones . The latter two also parodied the cover showing an old cannon , and the album title is also cited in the 2003 film School of Rock starring Jack Black.

In 2007, Rock Hard magazine compiled its list of the best from 500 rock and metal albums, in which the album was placed at number 405. This made it the last-placed work in the group of six placed albums. Götz Kühnemund awarded 9 out of 10 points in the magazine and came to the conclusion: “Of course, the successor - like every other AC / DC album - could not compete with the all-downing Back in Black , although the mighty title song (which is still today every AC / DC show crowns) belongs to the very best that a rock band has ever recorded. The rest of the disc is on a consistently high level, but falls a little behind the monumental opener with its cannon volleys. "

tour

For the album, the band completed the For Those About to Rock Tour , which took place in 1981 and 1982. The approximately one-year tour AC / DC began on November 11, 1981, initially with numerous concerts in the USA and Canada, which lasted in two sections until February 25, 1982, after which the band continued their tour with five concerts in Japan.

After a three-month break, the next gigs took place in Great Britain and Ireland. The tour was concluded with 15 concerts in Europe, including five in Germany. The last appearance of the tour was on December 20, 1982 in France. The setlist only included 3 of the 10 songs on For Those About to Rock .
