The Type 172 is a container feeder vessel type of Sietas in Neuenfelde . Eight units of this series were manufactured from 2002 to 2003.
history
This type of ship was designed primarily for feeder traffic in the Baltic Sea in the early 2000s . The first two ships in the series were ordered by the Dutch shipping company Holwerda Shipmanagement BV from Heerenveen and the shipping company Petra Heinrich KG from Jork . The other six units were ordered by the Hamburg-based Peter Döhle Schiffahrts-KG , which originally had the names Amica , Athena , Avilia , Astra , Anisia and Aura for them. Shortly after the order was placed, Reederei Döhle ceded the construction contract for the Amica to the Danz & Tietjens shipping group from Burg / Dithmarschen , which gave the new building the name Frisia . The shipping company Gerd Bartels from Neu Wulmstorf took over the Athena construction contract and renamed the ship Francop . The new building ordered as Anisia was subsequently given the name Italia .
The keel laying of all eight units took place in 2002. The model ship of the series is the Tina with hull number 1159, which was delivered on April 24, 2003 as Gotland . By August 1, 2003, Sietas completed three more units with Helga , Frisia and Francop , which, like Gotland , had been chartered to Team Lines and were therefore given the names Helgaland , Öland and Tavastland . Initially, Team Lines used the four ships in the liner service from Hamburg and Bremerhaven through the Kiel Canal to the Baltic States and Scandinavia . The fifth ship, launched as the Avilia and chartered to the Danish Mærsk Line for five years , was delivered on September 3, 2003 under the name Maersk Falsterbo . The ships Astra and Anisia , which were completed in October 2003, were put into service as CMA CGM Tatiana for the French shipping company CMA CGM and as OOCL Norppa for the Hong Kong Orient Overseas Container Line (OOCL). The last ship of the series is the Aura , which was delivered on December 18, 2003 .
Francop incident
On the night of November 4, 2009, the Francop (ex. Tavastland ) was stopped by Israeli special forces in the eastern Mediterranean about 180 kilometers south of Cyprus and about 160 kilometers off the Israeli coast. The ship was sailing from Damiette ( Egypt ) to Limassol (Cyprus). The Syrian port city of Latakia should then be called. A few containers were opened while at sea and various types of weapons were found. Israeli naval units then escorted the Francop to the port of Ashdod (Israel), where a more detailed search of the containers was carried out. A total of 320 tons of war material were confiscated, including Katyusha rockets and mortar shells . The 36 containers came from Iran and had been loaded on board the Francop in Egypt . The armaments were likely to be delivered to Hezbollah via Syria . The Israeli armed forces considered it certain that neither the crew of the Francop nor the shipping company knew what was actually in the containers. The discovery of weapons was the largest of its kind in Israel to date.
technology
In contrast to the open-top container ships of the type 168 , which were manufactured in parallel, the type 172 has four box-shaped cargo holds with hatch covers . To save weight, the side panels amidships are relatively low. The bow is closed except for an area for the anchor winches designed largely open. The hulls are ice-reinforced and were assembled in a sectional construction. All eight ships are classified for an ice thickness of up to 80 centimeters ( ice class E3). No sub-types are distinguished within the series.
Type 172 can transport up to 822 20-foot standard containers (TEU) or, alternatively, a maximum of 378 40-foot containers (FEU) plus 66 TEU. The holds have a volume of 11,224 m³ and a capacity of 226 TEU, a further 596 TEU can be stowed on deck. The carrying capacity of the ships is 8,695 dwt . With an average weight of 14 t per container, a maximum of 536 TEU can be loaded for reasons of stability.
The hatch covers of cargo holds 1 and 2 are designed for a load capacity of 50 t (TEU) or 80 t (FEU) per container stack, those of hatches 3 and 4 for 60 t (TEU) and 90 t (FEU) per stack . The tank ceiling in cargo holds 1 and 2 can be loaded with 96 t per container stack (TEU) or with 136 t (FEU), the tank ceiling in cargo holds 3 and 4 with 90 t (TEU) or 100 t (FEU). All four holds are equipped with cell guides. Cell guides are sometimes available on deck, reaching up to the third tier. There are connections for 150 refrigerated containers on board , 50 of which are in the holds. Type 172 is suitable for transporting containers with special dimensions (30 and 45 feet).
All eight ships are powered by a 8400 kW MaK-9M43 diesel engine from the Kiel manufacturer Caterpillar Motoren , which acts on a variable-pitch propeller via a reduction gear . They have an electrically powered bow thruster with 750 kW output for berthing and casting off maneuvers . A shaft generator and two Caterpillar diesel generators are available to generate electricity on board . An emergency generator was also installed.
