Career
Laufer began his career in the northern Ruhr area at SpVgg Erkenschwick . In the course of the 1970/71 season he moved up to the regional league team of Erkenschwicker and scored a goal for the Red-Blacks from the Stimberg Stadium in 16 missions . Under coach Heinz Sewina and teammates Hugo Lütkebohmert , Dieter Renfert , Reinhold Ressemann and Karl-Heinz Seidenkranz , the game association took 15th place. The game association lost the last game of the season on May 16, 1971 against the champions and later Bundesliga promoted VfL Bochum with 3-0 goals. For the 1971/72 season , the talented player got a contract offer from Bundesliga club VfL Bochum . Under coach Hermann Eppenhoff Laufer belonged to the debut team of VfL in the Bundesliga on August 14, 1971. The Bundesliga debut succeeded with a 1-0 win against Eintracht Braunschweig. With Werner Krämer and Werner Balte Laufer formed the middle field. But he didn't make it to be a regular player; In his first season Laufer, who began his career as a midfielder and was later retrained as a defender , only played eight games alongside top performers Werner Krämer, Hans Walitza and Reinhold Wosab . In the following seasons 1972/73 and 1973/74 he played 16 and 19 times respectively under Eppenhoff's successor Heinz Höher . Laufer's last Bundesliga game was on March 16, 1974, when he lost 2-0 away to VfB Stuttgart. With Franz-Josef Tenhagen , Michael Lameck and Hans-Günter Etterich he formed the VfL midfield.
For the debut season 1974/75 of the 2nd Bundesliga, Franz-Josef Laufer went to the second division club Schwarz-Weiß Essen . Here he immediately became a regular player. On the start day of the round, August 3, 1974, it was enough with teammates Horst Gecks , Hans Fritsche and Holger Trimhold to a 0-0 draw against VfL Wolfsburg. Under coach Hubert Schieth , SWE placed in the front midfield of the table in his second and third year. With the 0-2 defeat at home on May 22, 1977, the hardworker said goodbye to the Grugastadt. Now players like goalkeeper Hans Wulf , Klaus Albert , Detlev Wiemers , Thomas Hörster and Uwe Reinders were his teammates. Laufer played a total of 102 games for Schwarz-Weiß Essen and scored a goal on matchday 20 in a 3-1 win against SG Wattenscheid 09 .
For the 1977/78 season he moved to league rivals SC Westfalia Herne . In the stadium at Schloss Strünkede he ranked in 1978/79 under coach Gerd Prokop in fifth place, but due to the turbulence around patron Erhard Goldbach , Herne gave back the license at the end of the round and played in the Oberliga Westfalen in 1979/80. Like goalkeeper Hans-Jürgen Bradler, Laufer was still available to coach Horst Wandolek and Westfalia came in ninth. Laufer's last season in paid football was in 1980/81 with his home club SpVgg Erkenschwick , which had meanwhile been promoted to the 2nd Bundesliga . Under coach Klaus Quinkert , he added another 40 games and three goals to his personal record alongside teammates Hans-Jürgen Wittkamp , Uwe Eplinius , Gisbert Horsthemke and Klaus-Peter Kerkemeier . Franz-Josef Laufer ended his professional career with the 4-2 home win on May 30, 1981 against Union Solingen. He played a total of 211 games in the 2nd Bundesliga and scored six goals.
