Franz Gall (historian)

Franz Gall (born August 17, 1926 in Korneuburg , † July 22, 1982 in Trient , Italy ) was an Austrian historian and heraldist . He was head of the university archives and associate professor at the University of Vienna .

Life

Gall was born in 1926 as the son of a higher regional judge and his wife in Korneuburg, Lower Austria . From 1936 he attended secondary schools in Stockerau , Melk and Linz . After graduating from high school in 1943, he did military service, in Italy he was taken prisoner of war , where he remained until 1946.

From 1946 to 1952 he studied history, German literature and art history at the University of Vienna. In 1951 he was at Alfons Lhotsky with the dissertation The Dukes of Mödling to Dr. phil. PhD. At the same time he attended from 1949 to 1952 as an extraordinary member of the course of the Vienna Institute for Austrian Historical Research (1952 examination paper on the seals of the Babenbergs ).

In 1952/53 he became a (scientific) assistant at the library of the Institute for Austrian Historical Research. From 1953 to 1982 he was head of the Vienna University Archives (Hofrat): in 1955 he was accepted into the scientific service, in 1959 he became a scientific assistant, in 1962 senior assistant and in 1971 senior councilor.

In 1965 he received a lectureship in university history at the University of Vienna, where he completed his habilitation in 1969 . In 1969 he became a university lecturer for Austrian history with a special focus on university history and insignia . In 1973 he was awarded the title of associate professor (tit. Ao. Prof.).

In 1963 he was editor of the yearbook of the Austrian Exlibris Society , from 1967 of the publications on Austrian university history Archigymnasium and from 1971 of the journal for university research, cultural and intellectual history Acta universitatum . He also worked in the 1950s and 1960s as editor of the New Yearbook and the magazine for genealogy and heraldry Adler of the Heraldic-Genealogical Society "Adler" , of which he was a board member from 1966 to 1973. He was also a board member (from 1963) and president (from 1980) of the University Association Alma Mater Rudolphina. In 1966 he was involved in the establishment of a university history section. From 1974 he was available as vice-president of its successor organization, the Institute for University Research. He was also (co-) founder of the University Ball (1965) and a founding member of the Association of Austrian Archivists (1967), the Austrian Society for Cultural History (1969) and the International Cultural History Symposium Mogersdorf (1969) as well as a member of the International Commission for University History of the Comité International des Sciences Historiques (1964) and the Académie internationale d'héraldique (1965).

Gall was married and had three children.
