Franz Martin (born March 13, 1826 in Kaiserslautern , † February 11, 1906 in Starnberg ) was a Bavarian major general .

Franz was the fifth child of the senior building officer Joseph Martin (1790–1831) and his wife Luise Margarethe, née Gärtner (1799–1864). His eldest sister, Apollonia Josepha Ludowika Martin (1820–1911), was the wife of the doctor, publisher and politician Lukas Jäger (1811–1874); his eldest brother Paul Martin (1821–1901) was a painter.

Military career

After graduating from the Cadet Corps , Martin joined the 11th Infantry Regiment of the Bavarian Army as a Junker on August 11, 1845 . On April 7, 1847 he was promoted to second lieutenant and on April 10, 1850 to first lieutenant . On May 16, 1859, Martin became a captain 2nd class in the Infantry Leib-Regiment and on March 31, 1866 captain 1st class.

In 1866 Martin took part in the battles near Nüdlingen , Homburg, Uettingen and Roßbrunn as head of the 5th rifle company during the war against Prussia . By army order of August 20, 1866, Martin was commended for his behavior in front of the enemy.

After his promotion to major on September 18, 1870, Martin took part in the fighting at La Fourche, Villepion , Loigny / Poupry , Orléans and Meung during the war against France . As leader of the 1st Battalion, he suffered a serious gunshot wound in the right lower leg in the battle of Beaugency . For his behavior he was decorated with the Knight's Cross 1st Class of the Order of Military Merit and the Iron Cross 2nd Class.

From April 15 to 23, 1871, he was appointed courier to the German Army High Command. On February 7, 1872, the Bavarian King granted him permission to accept and wear the Commander II class of the Order of Albrecht given to him by the Saxon King . On January 1, 1872 he was appointed commander of the III. Battalion and in early December 1874 he rose to lieutenant colonel . On October 1, 1878, Martin became commander of the newly established 16th Infantry Regiment and in this position he was promoted to colonel on December 1, 1878 . From October 1 to 14, 1880, Martin took part in an information course for regimental infantry commanders at the military shooting school in Spandau and from April 20 to May 21, 1881 in the exercises of the Prussian Guard Corps . Under awarding of the character as a Major General Martin took his on April 24, 1882 farewell with board .

Numerous generals and the former Minister of War Adolph von Asch , who died only a few days later, on February 21, 1906, attended his funeral in the old northern cemetery in Munich .

family

On June 8, 1852, he married Therese Mayr (1825–1882). The daughter Luise (1853–1930) emerged from the marriage and married Lieutenant Colonel Max Schaezler (1841–1915). The son Franz , rose to lieutenant general (1844-1931) and was raised to the personal nobility in 1917 by being awarded the Order of Merit of the Bavarian Crown .
