Franz Xaver Schmid (philosopher)

Franz Xaver Schmid (as a writer: Franz Xaver Schmid-Schwarzenberg ; born October 22, 1819 in Schwarzenberg am Böhmerwald , † November 28, 1883 in Munich ) was a philologist , folk writer and university professor . He was one of the pioneers in the popular education movement .

Life

Schmid was the son of a customs officer . He grew up in poor conditions. First he was trained at the Stiftsgymnasium Kremsmünster with the Benedictines , at the same time as the later lawyer Karl Wagner von Inngau . He then moved to the high school in Salzburg . From 1840 to 1844 he devoted himself to studying Catholic theology in Salzburg and was ordained a priest in 1843 .

Schmid took part in the political machinations of 1848 . During this time his interest and enthusiasm for philosophy was awakened. He devoted himself to studying philosophy and went to Vienna , Hungary , the University of Breslau and the University of Bonn . At the University of Freiburg he was finally awarded a Dr. phil. PhD . Afterwards he was first high school professor for philosophy and history at the Lyceum in Rastatt , before he returned via Switzerland to Salzburg and into the church service.

Schmid remarked soon after his return to the church service that he is no longer with the beliefs of the Roman Catholic Church agreed, and converted by the Austrian Concordat of 1855 to Protestantism . He moved to Erlangen . At the university there he completed his habilitation with the thesis De inventione veritatis and in the summer of 1856 became a private lecturer . His lectures were very popular and in 1862 he was appointed Associate Professor of Philosophy in Erlangen .

Schmid founded several people's educational associations in the Kingdom of Bavaria , for example in Erlangen in 1871 or in Augsburg in 1878 . In 1880 he was one of the founders of the umbrella organization, the Bavarian State Association for Public Education. In 1876 he founded an educational institution for the people in Bäumenheim , from 1881 he also founded various day care centers for both boys and girls.

Schmid had a son who became a lawyer and last lived in Munich. There he died of a stroke . He was buried on November 30, 1883 in Erlangen.
