Friedrich Wilhelm von der Groeben (born November 24, 1774 in Landsberg an der Warthe , † July 19, 1839 in Koblenz ) was a Prussian lieutenant general and commander of Koblenz and Ehrenbreitstein .

Life

His parents were the Prussian lieutenant Hans Gottlob von der Groeben († 1777) and his wife Anna Dorothea Sophie, née Eder.

Military career

Groeben visited the Berlin cadet house on January 18, 1788 and was employed on March 11, 1794 as portepeef ensign in the von Knobelsdorff infantry regiment of the Prussian army . As an ensign he took part in the battles near Trippstadt and Johanniskreuz during the First Coalition War and advanced to Prime Lieutenant by the end of September 1806 . During the Fourth Coalition War , with the surrender of the Hameln Fortress on November 21, 1806, he was taken prisoner.

Groeben left the Prussian army and entered the Westphalian service as a captain on April 1, 1808 . On June 4, 1808 he became company commander of the Guards carbine. On March 8, 1809 he was promoted to major and on June 13, 1810 to lieutenant colonel. On October 26, 1812 he became a colonel and regimental commander and took part in the Russian campaign in this capacity . He acquired the cross of the French Legion of Honor .

With the beginning of the wars of liberation Groeben returned to the Prussian army. He was promoted to major on December 21, 1813 and appointed commander of the 4th Westphalian Landwehr Infantry Regiment. For the battle at Severes he received the Iron Cross, 2nd class. Groeben fought at the siege of Küstrin , as well as the battles of Ligny and Belle Alliance . For Belle Alliance he received the Order of St. George III. Class and the Order of the Iron Helmet .

On October 4, 1815, he was promoted to lieutenant colonel and on January 5, 1816 , he was transferred to the 3rd Infantry Regiment (2nd East Prussian) as a commander. With a patent from October 14, 1818, he was promoted to colonel on September 11, 1818 . In 1825 Groeben received the service cross and on September 2, 1826 he was awarded the Order of the Red Eagle III. Class excellent. On January 12, 1827 he was appointed commander of the 10th Landwehr Brigade and, at the end of February 1827, aggregated to the 3rd Infantry Regiment. On March 30, 1829, Groeben was promoted to major general with a patent from April 4, 1829. On January 18, 1832, on the occasion of the festival of the Order, he was awarded the Order of the Red Eagle, 2nd class with oak leaves. From March 30, 1832 to March 29, 1835 he acted as commander of the 5th Landwehr Brigade and then worked as an inspector of the federal fortresses of Luxembourg and Mainz . In this capacity, Groeben received the star for the Order of the Red Eagle, 2nd Class with Oak Leaves, on January 18, 1837, before he was appointed first commandant of Koblenz and Ehrenbreitstein on August 24, 1837. On March 30, 1839 he received the character of Lieutenant General and on June 11, 1839 with the date of March 30, 1839 the patent for this rank. He died shortly afterwards on July 19, 1839 in Koblenz.
