Bernhard Wilhelm von der Groeben (born July 6, 1810 in Kassel , † August 27, 1892 in Helsingør , Denmark ) was a Prussian lieutenant general .

Life

Wilhelm was a son of the Prussian Lieutenant General Friedrich Wilhelm von der Groeben (1774–1839) and his wife Dorothea, born von Voss (1778–1860).

Military career

Groeben attended the Collegium Fridericianum in Königsberg and joined the 1st Guard Regiment on foot in the Prussian Army on July 17, 1827 as a fusilier . By mid-September 1828 he was promoted to second lieutenant , on 11 January 1842 he was commanded as adjutant of the 1st Guard Infantry Brigade and in mid-April 1843 was promoted to prime lieutenant . After he was released from this command at the end of March 1848, Groeben became a captain and company commander on May 24, 1848 . On September 7, 1850 he was appointed commander of the Leib Company. As a major , he was initially commissioned at the beginning of September 1855 to lead the 1st battalion and on January 3, 1857 he was appointed battalion commander. During the mobilization on the occasion of the Sardinian War , Groeben was in 1859 as a lieutenant colonel in command of the mobile 1st Guard Landwehr Regiment.

In the course of the army expansion, Groeben was commissioned on May 8, 1860 with the leadership of the 1st Combined Guard Infantry Regiment, from which the 3rd Guards Regiment emerged on foot on July 4, 1860 . With the budgeting of the association he was appointed regimental commander and on the occasion of Wilhelm I's coronation celebrations , he was promoted to colonel on October 18, 1861 . During the war against Denmark in 1864, Groeben led his regiment in the fighting near Satrup - Rackebüll , Fredericia , in the storming of the Düppeler Schanzen as well as in the transition to Alsen . For his work he received the swords for the Order of the Red Eagle III. Class with a bow.

Due to health reasons, Groeben was released from his command, aggregated into the regiment on April 18, 1865 and transferred to the army officers two months later and promoted to major general . Since there was no improvement in his health, he was put up for disposal on August 14, 1865 with a pension and an annual subsidy of 350 thalers .

He was a legal knight of the Order of St. John and received the character of Lieutenant General on March 20, 1888 .

family

Groeben married Marie von Trotha (1818–1903) on May 25, 1837 in Potsdam . The son Günther (1838–1901) and daughters Hedwig (* 1841), Marie (1849–1862) and Margarete (* 1852) emerged from the marriage.
