Friedrich Wilhelm Theodor Grolman , von Grolman since 1871 (born September 10, 1817 in Unna , † February 12, 1881 in Coburg ) was a Prussian lieutenant general .

Life

Friedrich was a son of the Prussian major Theodor Grolman (1783-1859) and his wife Johanne, née Büttner, adopted Zahn (1797-1854).

Military career

Grolman attended the garrison school in Saarlouis and the cadet houses in Potsdam and Berlin . Subsequently, on August 14, 1834, he was transferred to the 17th Infantry Regiment of the Prussian Army as Portepeefähnrich. By the end of June 1848 he was promoted to prime lieutenant and in the following year took part in the battles at Philippsburg , Waghäusel , Bischweier and Kuppenheim in the course of the suppression of the revolution in the Rheinpfalz and Baden . From mid-December 1850 to late April 1851 and from late February 1852 to mid-October 1854, Grolman was in command as a company commander in the 17th Landwehr Regiment. He rose to captain in June 1852 and was appointed chief of the 7th Company on April 7, 1855 . After a renewed command as a company commander in the 17th Landwehr Regiment, Grolman moved up on July 1, 1860 with the promotion to major in the regimental staff. On April 7, 1863, when he was appointed commander of the Fusilier Battalion stationed in Wesel , he was transferred to the 8th Westphalian Infantry Regiment No. 57 . In this capacity, Grolman advanced to lieutenant colonel in mid-June 1865 and took part in the battles near Münchengrätz and Königgrätz the following year during the war against Austria . For his work he was awarded the Red Eagle Order IV. Class with Swords and on October 30, 1866 appointed commander of the newly formed Infantry Regiment No. 87 in Mainz and promoted to colonel .

Grolman commanded his regiment in 1870/71 during the war against France in the battles near Weissenburg , Wörth , Sedan and the siege of Paris . At times he was also the leader of the 41st and 44th Infantry Brigades . After the peace treaty he was appointed commander of the 3rd Infantry Brigade in Danzig on June 3, 1871 and on June 16, 1871 "because of the bravery shown in the war against France against the enemy" by Kaiser Wilhelm I to the hereditary Prussian nobility raised .
