Burghofbühne in May 2009: Construction work on Shakespeare's "Midsummer Night's Dream"

The Friesacher Burghofspiele are a theater association based in Friesach in Carinthia.

timeline

In 1949, after a successful Goethe celebration with scenes from Faust , members of the Friesach men's choir decided that the upper courtyard of the Friesacher Petersberg would be a suitable venue for open-air performances. The association was founded in 1953. From 1950 to 1971 the architect Hannes Sandler (since 1968 also Prof.hc) was the driving force behind this venture as director , stage designer and leading actor. After Hannes Sandler had to take a break from playing for health reasons, this also meant the end of the so-called old castle courtyard games on the Petersberg.

There was no play from 1972 to 1974. Between 1975 and 1977, the municipality of Friesach, which acted as organizer, revived the theater tradition by commissioning students from the Max Reinhardt Seminar from Vienna to organize the summer theater under the title Friesach Summer Games . Now, however, no longer on Petersberg, but on the open-air facility in the inner courtyard of the Dominican Convention (so-called Dominican Court).

In 1978 a game community of Friesach amateurs was formed again, which played the performances until 1987 as the Friesach Summer Games (with the municipality of Friesach as the organizer). Since 1988, the Friesacher Burghofspiele association has been the organizer again.

In addition to the all-summer open-air productions, there were the Friesach Fairy Tale Sundays in 1982 , the Friesach Christmas Play in 1988 and the Friesach Autumn Theater in 2002 .

In 1992 the revitalized Burghofbühne on Petersberg was put back into operation.

The open-air stage is open from late June to mid-August. The fairytale Sundays in the Stadtsaal are played on Sundays from the beginning of July to mid-August. The theater autumn in the city hall is in October. The Christmas game in the city hall is in mid-December.
