Fritz Lamerdin (born April 22, 1911 in Wiesloch ; † March 24, 1993 ) was a German forest official . He was considered a pioneer of modern forest policy and was instrumental in setting up the Baden-Württemberg state forest administration.

Live and act

Fritz Lamerdin came from a respected family in Wiesloch. After studying forest science , Fritz Lamerdin passed the Great State Forest Examination in 1938 . However, the Second World War interrupted his entry into the forestry profession . From 1940 to 1945 he was a soldier and in January 1945 was taken prisoner by the Soviets , from which he did not return until 1949. From 1950 he headed the Walldürn Forestry Office , but in 1953 he was appointed head of the “State Forest Administration” department of the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Agriculture and Food (later “Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Forests”). In this function Lamerdin was one of the "men of the first hour" who helped build this administrative branch for the newly formed federal state. Forest policy in the broadest sense was at the center of his professional activity . In the following almost two decades, he headed numerous departments in the ministry in various combinations: forest work , tariffs, forest budget, properties , hunting and fishing , forest policy, forest law , corporate and private forest , spatial planning and regional planning , nature conservation , land maintenance and recreation . Important results of his work were the private forest announcement of 1960 as well as the Management and Promotion Contributions Act.

Fritz Lamerdin, who was also the deputy of the state forest president, was one of the first to recognize the protective and recreational function of the forest in industrial society and therefore included spatial planning, nature conservation and land maintenance in the range of tasks of the forest administration. He always emphasized a multifunctional, holistic view of forestry in the sense of Victor Dieterich's theory of forest functions and advocated the protection of natural resources and the balance between economic and ecological interests. Fritz Lamerdin not only published articles in forestry journals on a regular basis and arranged for appropriate training courses for forest officials, but also made his views public to a broader public outside of the closer forestry sphere of activity.

He was significantly involved in decrees drawn up together with other ministries on forest conservation and on cooperation between the forest administration and the nature conservation administration as well as the bodies involved in state, regional and urban land use planning . Lamerdin emphatically advocated using forest authorities and officials in the course of administrative assistance for nature conservation and landscape maintenance work outside the forest. He also managed to get the Baden-Württemberg state parliament to recommend that vacant positions of district nature conservation officers be transferred to forest management officials if possible.

From 1972 until the age-related retirement on May 1, 1976, he headed the Forest Research and Research Institute (FVA) in Freiburg im Breisgau. There he formed, among other things, a working group that examined the social benefits of the state forest enterprise.

Already during his active service Lamerdin held numerous honorary positions, also outside of his forestry area. He was vice-president of the Federal Association of the German Forest Protection Association , from 1972 member of the board of the German Nature Conservation Association (DNR) , member of the advisory board for spatial planning and the working group "Development Concept for the Landscape" at the Federal Ministry of the Interior , member of the Board of Trustees for Nature Parks at the Federal Ministry of Food Agriculture and Forests , Chairman of the Committee for Regional Planning and Land Management and member of the Legal and Forest Policy Committee of the German Forestry Council (DFWR) . Even in retirement, he continued to work for many years in several federal bodies. He was chairman of the board of directors of the Wilhelm Münker Foundation for Public Health , Hiking, Nature Conservation and Heritage Protection in Hilchenbach . He also wrote several papers in the 1980s for their series of articles on quality of life, forest conservation and environmental protection, health, hiking and home care .

His work received public recognition, among other things, through the award of the Federal Cross of Merit 1st Class (1981) and the award of the Wilhelm Leopold Pfeil Prize of the Alfred Töpfer Foundation FVS Hamburg in 1982.

Forest President a. D. Fritz Lamerdin died on March 24, 1993 after a brief, serious illness.
