A total of 37 teams registered to take part in the 1992 Africa Cup in Senegal.

Defending champions Algeria and hosts Senegal were set for the finals. Mauritania prevailed against Gambia in a preliminary round (2: 0 home win / 1: 2 away defeat). The game was played in six groups of four and two groups of five. The eight group winners and the two runners-up in the groups of five qualified for the final tournament in Senegal.
