- Match report : After the opening debacle against Algeria, reparations were called for in the German camp and much was reminiscent of 1978 . Back then there was a pitiful 0-0 win against Poland (this time 1-2 against Algeria) and a 6-0 win against Mexico followed. This time a 4: 1 against Chile could be achieved. Captain Rummenigge not only proved with his three goals that he was rightly voted Europe's footballer of the year . Chile, which ran up without veteran Carlos Caszely , got completely off the mark with the early 1-0 and never came into play. There was great satisfaction on the German side: the second round was again within reach, while Chile had already been eliminated after two defeats.
