Intermediate round
Opponents in the second round were hosts Spain and Germany . The first game against the German team ended in a goalless draw. Since the Germans had won 2-1 against Spain three days earlier, England had to win by at least two goals in order to reach the semi-finals. Despite a clear superiority and several goalscoring, the English did not get beyond a 0-0 and were eliminated as second in the group without defeat and with only one goal.
