The German team started the tournament with a happy division of points. Panico put the Italians in the lead after 36 minutes. Bettina Wiegmann equalized in the 61st minute with a penalty.

Germany - Mexico 6-0 (2-0) ( Portland , Civic Stadium , 20,169 spectators)
With one change, the German team went into the game against the underdog from Mexico: Sandra Minnert moved to the right defender position for Kerstin Stegemann. Inka Grings (10th) and Sandra Smisek (45th) ensured a calming half-time lead. Shortly after the restart, Ariane Hingst made the preliminary decision with a 3-0 win. Two more hits by Grings (57th, 90th) and Renate Lingor (89th) led to the 6-0 victory. Inka Grings is still the only German player to have scored three goals in a World Cup game.

Tina Theune-Meyer made another change for the last group game. Martina Voss took the position of Sandra Smisek. After just eight minutes, the German team took the lead through Prinz. A double strike by Katia da Silva and Sissi (15th, 20th) put the Brazilian team in the front. Shortly after the restart, Bettina Wiegmann equalized with a penalty. After 59 minutes, Steffi Jones brought the German team back into the lead and group victory was within reach. But in the last minute, Maicon equalized and Brazil were group winners. The German team was only second. This saved her the trip to Foxborough , but she had to face hosts USA in the quarter-finals. Bettina Wiegmann completed her 100th international match.

Sandra Smisek returned to the starting line-up for the injured Martina Voss. The quarter-finals turned into an exciting game in which the German team failed on their own nerves. Brandi Chastain made an own goal after five minutes . Tiffeny Milbrett equalized after 16 minutes. Shortly before the half-time whistle, Wiegmann brought the German selection back into the lead, but it did not last long. Chastain hit the right goal (49th) and Fawcett scored the winning goal (66th).
